About this deal

The main problem with the PD paper is time. With 50 scenarios and 95 minutes you get around 1 minute 48 seconds per question. However as the scenarios require some thought it can be easy to spend too long on some questions and run out of time. The key here is practice and to understand the scoring as we'll see in a second.

It is important to practice online questions as much as you can to familiarise yourself with the format, and to ensure you cover the broad range of specialties included in the exam. Often candidates complete online question banks more than once prior to the exam (either the same bank, or they sign up to multiple banks) alongside other revision. Using question banks is a good way to test your knowledge and to highlight areas for improvement. An erythematous facial rash (one or both cheeks) is a key defining feature, but usually other prodromal features are common e.g. low-grade fever, myalgia, nausea, runny nose

Taking the MSRA

The exam is divided into two components: the Professional Dilemmas/SJT paper and the clinical problem-solving test (CST). The Professional Dilemmas paper is designed to assess your ability to respond to ethical and professional scenarios, and to make appropriate decisions in difficult situations. The CST is designed to measure your ability to apply clinical knowledge to solve problems, and to demonstrate your understanding of the principles of clinical practice. Professional Dilemmas Paper/SJT SBA questions present a clinical scenario and ask the candidate to select the single best answer from a list of options. Each SBA question usually requires the candidate to apply clinical knowledge and reasoning skills to identify the most appropriate diagnosis or management option for the given scenario. To prepare for the MSRA, you will need to register for an account with Pearson VUE. If you are long-listed, you will be sent an invitation. Registering an account for the MSRA Section one of PD paper uses ranking questions. You get a scenario, there's four or five options and you rank them best to worse. In section two of the PD paper there's a scenario, there's eight options and you're asked to select the three most appropriate options from the list.

The Medibuddy team is a group of doctors with a special interest in using the latest educational technology to improve medical education.Underestimating the difficulty of the exam - as it's a free exam and is part of specialty selection it might be easy to think "yep I know how to do an SJT exam" and then not prepare.

You will be presented with clinical scenarios and required to utilise your judgement and problem solving skills to determine the appropriate diagnosis and treatment of patients. As you progress through the questions a series of key points are stored. These high-yield facts are invaluable for last minute revision Number of questions: 50 (see this video which covers how to approach the two main types of MSRA SJT Question)When preparing for MSRA, there are two main chosen approaches – question-bank based and ‘formal revision’ based. The MSRA exam was first introduced in 2013 as part of the selection process for core medical training, and has since been expanded to cover a wide range of specialties. Every time you answer a question in the Medibuddy MSRA question bank you will be shown if your answer is correct or incorrect, with a detailed explanation, which is a really useful tool for your revision. The question bank is adaptive, which means you get a personalised learning experience, so every question you answer has been selected specifically for you to improve your score. The MSRA is delivered in Pearson VUE test centres across several consecutive days within the MSRA window. The exam is offered throughout the UK and internationally; you can find your closest test centre here. It’s worth noting that there may not be availability at your nearest or preferred Pearson VUE test centre, due to the demand within the short assessment window, so you may be required to travel further to sit your exam. The Clinical Problem Solving Paper is designed to assess your ability to apply your clinical knowledge and make clinical decisions within the context of everyday practice.

Most other specialties use the MSRA as part of your overall score and combine the MSRA with interviews. If you're applying for CT1 anaesthetics for example your MSRA score contributes 15% of your overall rank. A is a poor option as it potentially breaches patient confidentiality and may cause distress to the patient and relative. You are taking action to try and ensure patient understanding but going about it in a way that i) undermines the registrar, ii) may negatively impact your working relationship and iii) may negatively impact the patient and family’s trust in the medical care being provided. It’s so basic, but remember to read the question carefully – it’s easy to miss things when you’re rushing and the information provided will help you to give the best possible answer to the question.
