She then discusses her love making, which evokes a sense of loneliness, especially when realizing her love making is not love making at all, but meaningless sex with strangers, as the title tells us. Throughout the entire story, Mayne does not write directly, but leaves much of the meaning of the story open to interpretation.

Here inthe West End, I change the cast every nine months; a process which I used to view with acertain trepidation but which I now welcome. Actors like to be doing different things anrespond to different challenges and this is a healthy process. To perform a play eight times aweek, for forty weeks, is a daunting challenge. The reader is treated to Phillips' familiar poetic prose and stream of consciousness narrative in this haunting tale of violent alienation in modern-day America.This is her first collection. With early stories, there's a sense of adventurousness--but there can also be pretense and self-indulgence. Some of the stories are so oblique and almost intentionally confusing that I found myself wishing a given story would end. The technique is hit and miss. Phillips often writes about sex--the dirtier and sleazier the better. There are no cotillions or country clubs in these stories; they're all set in the worst parts of the worst towns. I like that. A fourteen-year-old girl leaves a succession of foster homes for the bleak and compelling world of two drug addicts. These are wonderful stories. It's a small theatre which adds to the ambience. My 13 year old daughter was clinging to my arm throughout the second act and absolutely loved it. I wouldn't take younger children, as it is dark and makes everyone jump on several occasions. When it started I wasn’t sure how it would play out but I really enjoyed it. A play within a play!
