Llandovery is a traditional rural Welsh market town and is a fantastic place to live or visit. It is easily accessible being on the main A40 road from Brecon in the East to the beautiful coast in the West and is also on the Heart of Wales railway line which runs from Shrewsbury to Swansea.

At 120Km long (75 miles) the Tywi is the longest river entirely in Wales. It is famed for its Sea Trout (local name Sewin) and Salmon fishing. Its origins are high in the Cambrian Mountains, from there it winds its way through steep sided valleys down to a wide flood plain. Centuries of winter flooding have built up an alluvial soil in the valley bottom, producing the lush grass which supports the County’s dairy industry. The river flows into Carmarthen Bay meeting the sea at Llansteffan. The design of the statue, by Toby and Gideon Petersen, was chosen after a national competition. It was funded by the National Lottery and the Arts Council of Wales. Llandovery takes its name from the least significant of all the rivers which encircle it. It once served as an open sewer - no wonder it was called Bawddwr dirty water, or Foulbrook. In 1836 it was put into an arched culvert and the streets paved over. Like many local farmers Rhodri is now part of the growing tourism sector. With his wife Carys, he runs Gelli Glamping further down the Tywi Valley. Norman and medieval castle [ edit ] Llandovery Castle, Carmarthenshire, by Henry Gastineau, seen about 1830 Llandovery is a small market town of approximately 1,700 inhabitants in the eastern part of Carmarthenshire. Stop and take time to visit this ancient Drovers' Town, and enjoy the small shops and cafes that share some of the spirit of the town, its people and environs. The town owes its origin to its position as an important bridging point on the river Tywi. This was recognised by the Romans who established a fort and by the Normans who built the castle. The town has a long history as a market town and the large number of public houses in the town are its inheritance from droving days.

The River Tywi which has its origins high in the hills beyond Rhandirmwyn (now intercepted by the Llyn Brianne Dam), flows some 112 km (70 miles) to the coast at Carmarthen Bay. Centuries of winter flooding have built up an alluvial soil in the valley bottom, producing the lush grass which supports the County’s dairy industry. Llandovery is one of those small towns in Wales that you could easily miss off your Wales itinerary. There are actually lots of reasons to visit Llandovery though.
