About this deal

Consistency-wise, they are quite thin, similar to pre-thinned airbrush metallic paints. From left to right: Broadsword Silver, Talos Bronze, and Hoplite Gold from the Speedpaint 2.0 range

As you can see, the Speedpaints go on very nicely. With colours like Zealot Yelow, Sand Golem, and Fire Giant Orange you can create interesting shades of copper and gold or go wild and try out bolder metallic hues, like Plasmatic Bolt on the right leg. Next, I had my brand-new HQ addition to my list, the Nerotyrant, and with that, my love of Goddess Glow really came through. The speed paint does an amazing job with its color and simplicity, and I didn’t feel any need to use a wash over the paint I was already using. Again, I used the Bony Matter paint, and then I moved into using the Raging Sea paint for the brain matter. For the pipeing that is on the base, I used the Ashen Stone paint which again, was amazing with its coverage. Since receiving these paints I’ve started using them as a permanent fixture in my painting toolbelt. The range is very flexible and offers a variety of colors and hues that are difficult to find in competing ranges. There are a couple that underperformed compared to other paints in the range so there’s some variance (Nuclear Sunrise and Glittering Gold stand out in my memory as colors I wish I had but the paints don’t quite behave properly) but its certainly worth exploring the range despite this for the colors that are straight magic in a bottle

Fast, Easy, Fun!

The first thing to understand is that the latter two paint ranges have a very different formula than Contrast or Speedpaint. They are not based on dye, but on thinned acrylic pigments. Think of Citadel Nihiliakh Oxide or regular acrylic paints thinned with a lot of Contrast Medium. As a saving grace, I found if you just apply a few thin highlights in a similar colour to the Speedpaint you are painting over, the reactivation isn’t much of an issue. Edge highlights with Wild Rider Red and Jokaero Orange over Blood Red Speedpaint And here is the sheet for The Army Painter’s Speedpaints, which I just recently updated to cover all 89 colours of the Speedpaint 2.0 range.

I fully admit that fault lies entirely on my own dumb self. The easy fix is “don’t be an idiot”, but that hasn’t stopped me in the past. But I wanted to mention this regardless: if the Speedpaint doesn’t flow, don’t test your grid strength on it. Trust me. When applying, I noticed that Speedpaints are a bit thinner and runnier than Contrast paints, and the medium pushes the paint into the recesses more aggressively, which helps to create a smoother result even on flat areas. On the other hand, I found Contrast paints slightly easier to control because of their higher viscosity. I felt it was easier to put them on smaller details without accidentally spilling into adjacent areas. Review: New Vallejo Game Color range – now for pro painters only? 3k views | posted on January 7, 2023 Now, these little experiments are all well and good, but what does that mean for practical use? I have to say that unless you paint over with a very light colour, you will hardly notice any reactivation with Speedpaint 2.0. Even then, unlike the old Speedpaints, there is no varnishing needed. One or two additional layers of paint will pretty much remove the bleeding completely. On the Stormcast’s robes I layered and highlighted over Speedpaint that cured for about 20 minutes. As the highlight colours are quite similar, bleeding is not an issue at all. Layering and highlighting over the robes of a Stormcast Eternal painted with Beowolf BlueSpeedpaint Mega Set 2.0 comes with a new formula, expanded colour range that includes 45 new colours, and for the first time ever, it introduces Speedpaint Metallics! ToP Tip: Visual comparison of all 61 Contrast, 23 Xpress Colors, 89 Speedpaints & 36 Dipping Inks 4.2k views | posted on June 17, 2023 However, there is one thing I don’t like about Speedpaints that no one is really talking about: Even when they’re dried, they will reactivate when you paint over them. Here are some spots I wanted to touch up with Greyseer, and even though I applied multiple coats, the Blood Red Speedpaint keeps coming through, turning the Greyseer pink. I reached out to The Army Painter and they told me it is due to the composition of the medium and most prominent with Speedpaints containing a high amount of yellow pigments. Blood Red bleeding through Greyseer paint on top I could go on but I think you get the point. The all star, must grab paints used in this project were Bony Matter, which produces a grimy brown that behaves nicely and highlights well, Peachy Flesh, which offers a one coat Caucasian skin that works well when mixed with other paints, and Enchanted Steel, which is probably my favorite paint in the range since it provides a one coat dark metal that gets into recesses that are usually annoying to get into with a brush. And what about reactivation? I would say it’s similar to the regular Speedpaints. After 30 minutes the paint is very stable and can hardly be dissolved with water or wet paint, but Speedpaint Medium allows you to carefully remove the paint. My thoughts on metallic Speedpaints

As someone who doesn’t paint often or with much variety, I found Speedpaints 2.o to be a very nice change of pace compared what I’m used to using with the Citadel paints. I did have to use a lot of paint on my brush, and we had to make sure to paint over a white base. With a heavy coat over the models, it was very easy to create some really impressive results. The mecca of one-coat paint solution sets, the Speedpaint Complete Set features every Speedpaint colour in existence! That includes all 23 original colours, 44 newly developed colours, 10 Speedpaint Metallics - AND - 12 colours designed by Dana Howl, Watch It Paint It, and Goobertown Hobbies of our Paint Development Team! The set also includes an extra-large 100ml bottle of Speedpaint Medium. This was a handful of different colors: Murder Scene, Slaughter Red, Carmine Dragon, Nuclear Sunrise, and Noble Skin. Probably others too, as I wasn’t following any plan in particular. I was just grabbing the paints that looked about right, and trying stuff out. The Army Painter provided various Goonhammer painters with sets of Speed Paints for the purposes of this review. The all-in-one Speedpaint is true one-coat painting solution. Compared to its predecessor, the new Mega Set 2.0 comes with a new formula, expanded colour range that includes 45 new colours, and for the first time ever, it introduces Speedpaint Metallics!Thank you for scrolling through my Speedpaint 2.0 review to this point. Now, the moment you waited for: metallic Speedpaints. These are… something. I was able to review the three colours from the Mega Set, but there’ll be 10 in total. I have to admit, I was a bit underwhelmed when I saw the promo shots, so I was eager to give them a try. All Speedpaints come with two high-grade, rust-proof stainless steel Mixing Balls already loaded in the bottle, making it easier for you to get the perfect consistency.
