About this deal

Richard Chizmar’s Gwendy’s Magic Feather forwards an odyssey undertaken by Gwendy who was just twelve when she was made caretaker of a device that impacted her world and ours: it was the rewarding, dangerous and beguiling Button Box. As the forces of chaos and discord reveal themselves, it becomes clear that the Gwendy saga is part of a larger, overarching fictional universe: the world of King’s Dark Tower.

He is the recipientof the 2020 Audio Publishers Association Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2018 PEN America Literary Service Award, the2014 National Medal of Arts, and the2003 National Book Foundation Medal forDistinguished Contribution to American Letters. The second is the fact that, possibly because of long-term exposure to the box, she is in the initial stages of Alzheimer’s disease. King’s fingers are all over this, so if that’s a reason to keep you from taking the plunge, it’s time to put that to bed. She does not lose her sense of self, even as she doubts her past, present, and future deeds, which is admirable. The extraordinary journey that began as a “palaver” with a mysterious man named Richard Farris in a sharp suit and felt hat at the top of Castle Rock’s Suicide Stairs 25 years earlier has become a memory, floating but distant.C., thirty-seven-year-old Gwendy Peterson couldn’t be more different from the self-conscious teenaged girl who once spent a summer running up Castle Rock’s Suicide Stairs. The quality of both editions, from the paper, to the boards, to the dust jackets make both of them worth having side by side. There are disturbing disappearances going on in Castle Rock, and melee in the world at large, and the character of Gwendy feels ever more intensely as she attempts to ward off the temptation of the Button Box. Still, when Gwendy gets a kind of shine to her and she can read into the memories of someone she touches, the psychopath behind the missing girls is spotted, as is a crushed felt hat amidst the darkness in the Maine snow. For this final volume, the prolific King has rejoined the narrative, and the result is the longest, strangest, most satisfying installment in the trilogy.

It offers enticing treats and vintage coins, but he warns her that if she presses any of the box’s beautifully colored buttons, death and destruction will follow.

Quick, succinct chapters that moved the story along and helped push the emotions that really control most of this story. Before the Button Box had with the pull of a lever delivered delicious chocolates that improved all of the senses and gifted, for a time some of the things the holder of the Box desired; for Gwendy, she initially wanted to lose weight and as she got older she kept the box dispatching mint condition 1891 Morgan silver dollars so she could afford to go to an Ivy League college.

The forces attempting to acquire the box are the same ones attempting to bring down the Tower, which holds together an infinite number of possible worlds. But when the button box suddenly reappears in her life, she must decide if she is willing to risk everything for its temptations. When this was announced as book two of the trilogy, I still held off, as I wasn’t sure if book three would just be a Chizmar book with King’s blessing again. Richard and Stephen did a wonderful job of creating a story together that had all of the elements that I look for when reading these days. When Richard announced that King was involved in book three, I realized it would be a bit odd to have books one and three sitting on my shelf but not book two. The vivid memories come back strongly and a thought torments Gwendy: what role has the Button Box played in the outcomes of her life, of her successes and failures?

The extra characters add a new layer to the Castle Rock world and I’m sure there are a ton of easter eggs hidden throughout. I think it’s a book that’ll surprise those people who still haven’t made the effort to read it and I’m now, personally, excited to see how this series is closed out. The once kind and witty Gwendy of age 12 – the first time she held the Button Box – is still a kind and witty person, because that is her charm, even as she is beset by dangers to her home town, the Capitol, the world, and her family.

In Gwendy’s Button Box, twelve-year-old Gwendy Peterson’s life is forever changed when she is given a mysterious wooden box by a stranger for safekeeping. The box itself is a mahogany artifact with levers at each end and eight color-coded buttons across the top. In a carefully prepared scenario, Gwendy travels to a newly constructed international space station, at which point her own destiny and the destiny of the Button Box converge. In 2019, Chizmar carried the story forward with “ Gwendy’s Magic Feather,” a solo effort that effectively maintained the tone and overall ambiance of its predecessor.
