One of the main characteristics of dormice that live in temperate zones is hibernation. Dormice can hibernate six months out of the year, or even longer if the weather remains cold enough. They sometimes wake for a short amount of time so that they can eat food which they had previously stored nearby. During the summer, they store fat in their bodies, to give the dormouse the energy it needs to survive through the hibernation period. [2] Dormice are nocturnal rodents that sleep a lot! It’s this sleepy nature that has given them their name, as it comes from the French word “dormir” which means to sleep.

In one study, the rodents’ body temperatures were recorded at -2.9˚C, almost certainly the lowest core body temperature ever recorded in a mammal. Coppice management of wood-lands has also excessively focused on creating an appropriate habitat for the sustainability of dormice. But mass cleared areas and man-made obstructions are interfering with the free movement of dormice. This is because dormice live almost exclusively in trees. Are dormice pests? So if you have a dormouse as a pet, that extra care and handling are essential which may make it complicated to have a dormouse as a pet. Edible dormice usually spend around seven months out of the year hibernating in underground burrows. The rest of the year, these expert climbers—more closely related to squirrels than mice—take to the trees, only venturing from their hollows for a few hours each night to eat. This means opportunities to observe the animals are basically nonexistent, says Bujanauskas. ( Read about the fascinating ways animals prepare for cold weather.) The Dormouse makes cameo appearances in some crowd shots, popping out of a teapot that is on a table surrounded by Alice in Wonderland characters.
