I’ve had this for a few years after finding a fairly worn copy in a bookstore for a decent price, but I hadn’t read this cover-to-cover before. The book is pretty large so it’s impressive to behold, but I also think it’s probably going to fall apart easily if I look at it too much. This "much-discussed" couplet, as Lovecraft calls it in the latter story, has also been quoted in works by other authors, including Brian Lumley's The Burrowers Beneath, which adds a long paragraph preceding the couplet. Giger’s oeuvre as an artist, however, transcends beyond the sci-fi brand, blending horror and the macabre and delving into our insatiable curiosity with the things that scare us the most. Giger’s work was celebrated by a number of musicians, many of whom asked him to design their album cover art. For Debbie Harry’s 1981 record, KooKoo, Giger used a recent acupuncture session as inspiration, depicting Harry’s face being threaded by four needles. Harry had asked Giger during a gallery event. He accepted, but later confessed he had never heard her music. “This was due to the fact I was more interested in jazz,” he later wrote. The image was banned from advertisements in England. 11. Giger began with little ink sketches before moving on to oil paintings. He mostly worked with airbrushes for the majority of his career, creating monochrome canvases showing strange, horrific dreamscapes. He also used markers, pastels, and ink in his work. The xenomorph is an extraterrestrial from the most desolate parts of space. Hans Ruedi Giger is most recognized for influencing the aesthetic direction of Alien. Even so many years after his passing, his singular outlook continues to influence. The book was originally published by Sphinx Verlag and was republished in 1991 by Morpheus International with additional artwork from Giger's Alien designs.
