About this deal

Versatility in floral design: Baby’s Breath is often used as a filler or accent in floral arrangements, bouquets, and corsages. Its neutral colors and delicate appearance allow it to complement various flowers and colors, adding texture and volume without overpowering other blooms. Direct sow in ordinary garden soil in a sunny area after danger of heavy frost. Avoid too moist or acidic soils. These plants grow and spread in gardens, fields, woods, roadsides, ditches, sandbanks, pastures – just so long as the soil is not acidic.

These bugs spook easily, and as their name suggests, will bounce away when disturbed – so they can be hard to identify. You may notice tiny hopping insects when you get close to or brush up against your plant. Dig planting holes slightly larger than the root balls of the seedlings, maintaining a spacing of 12-15 inches (30-38 cm) between plants.Sow seeds evenly and thinly in rows 9 inches apart and cover very lightly with ¼ inch of fine soil. All need well-drained and slightly alkaline soil, so add horticultural grit and Levington® Lime to the soil in the autumn, before sowing or planting out the following year. Once the cutting has developed a healthy root system, transplant it into a larger pot or into the garden. As soon as seedlings emerge, provide plenty of light on a sunny windowsill or grow seedlings 3-4 inches beneath fluorescent plant lights turned on 16 hours per day, off for 8 hours at night. Raise the lights as the plants grow taller. Incandescent bulbs will not work for this process because they will get too hot. Most plants require a dark period to grow, do not leave lights on for 24 hours. Each plant puts up a large number of delicate stalks which carry large panicles of five-petalled flowers.

Deer and rabbit resistance: Although not completely resistant, the plant is less appealing to deer and rabbits due to its wiry stems and foliage. Though baby’s breath is generally a hardy, low maintenance plant, issues can arise, especially if there is too much moisture. Insects Almost all Baby’s Breath varieties are hardy to RHS Zone H7 – making them suitable to grow in all areas of the UK as perennials. How To Grow Baby’s Breath When you've got your seeds, ideally in late summer, prepare an open garden bed by raking in a few generous handfuls of compost and weeding out any unwanted plants. This perennial, creeping cultivar will bloom with rose pink flowers continuously throughout the season, and also works as a ground cover.Sow the seeds directly on the soil surface or lightly cover them with a thin layer of soil, as they require light to germinate. Space the seeds about 12 inches (30 cm) apart. Gypsophila prefer alkaline to neutral soil, and will not grow well in acidic soil. Add Levington® Lime to the soil surface annually in the late autumn to maintain optimum soil conditions. Avoid planting in clay soils which are prone to water retention, and instead aim for a sandy, well-drained location. Temperature and humidity Flowers: Baby’s Breath flowers are small and usually white or pale pink, forming clusters that create a light, airy effect. It is hard to treat but you can guard against it by mulching around the stem before the onset of winter. Botrytis

Fertilizing: Baby’s Breath doesn’t require much fertilizer, as it can grow in poor soils. However, in spring, you can apply a slow-release, balanced fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) to promote healthy growth. Be cautious not to over-fertilize, as too much nitrogen can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flower production. Sprinkle gypsophila in well spaced rows (10-20 cm apart) and water well. There is no need to cover. Baby’s Breath has been used to symbolise hope, rebirth and new beginnings, and is given in wedding bouquets and at baby showers as a blessing, sharing well wishes and good fortune for the years ahead.Aim to water gypsophila when the surface of the soil is dry, but there's still some moisture at a depth of 2”. This should avoid water logging and rotten roots, and provide a good balance of fresh water from spring to late autumn. While some perennial varieties can take two to three seasons to bloom, most will bloom in a year when started from seed. Transplanting Though Baby’s Breath flowers are commonly called a ‘florist’s filler’, the tiny blossoms are indescribably pretty accompaniments to the carnations, gerberas, and such that form the centrepiece of a bouquet.
