About this deal

With a 14.6" (370mm) minimum focus distance (MFD), the 24-70mm Art lens turns in an overall-good 0.21x maximum magnification (MM) at the 70mm mark. Since Sigma reverse engineers (vs. licenses) manufacturer electronics and algorithms, there is always the potential for a DSLR body to not be supported by a (likely older) third party lens. If you don't need the f/2.8 aperture, there are a number of f/4 lenses that cover or exceed the 24-70mm focal length range and all are worth considering.

But in other cases, I need several paragraphs to explain the complicated image quality a lens delivers. The 24mm end is great for landscape photography, for shooting indoors and in other tight places and for a wide range of other uses. While an image stabilized f/4 lens can be handheld in much lower light levels than a non-stabilized f/2.8 lens, stabilization does not help stop subject motion.

We achieved the best results at mid-range, at 35 and 50mm, but it is a good performer at the wider end as well, albeit with some astigmatism. Like others in this group, there’s a noticeable drop in sharpness at 70mm.

If you can accept the loss of stabilization and performance wide-open, the Tokina has an overall performance similar to the Sigma lens, yet boasts slightly higher peak sharpness, excellent transmission, and good control of lateral chromatic aberration. Conclusion: Good value for money for Nikon users In these results, we see the 24mm corners becoming nicely sharp at f/5.6 with 35 and 70mm results showing an increasingly noticeable bump in sharpness at f/8. For the longest time, in most DSLR brands, an f/2.8 aperture and optical stabilization were mutually exclusive in a lens covering 24-70mm focal length range. At 35mm the centre sharpness at maximum aperture drops off a little but is still good and the resolution towards the edges still lags behind. Just as with 24mm, stopping down to f/4 results in excellent sharpness across the frame and peak quality is achieved at f/8.

While it is one of the heaviest lenses in its class and while it gained in size over its predecessor, the 24-70 Art lens is one of the most-compact in its class.I am just as surprised as many of you reading this to report that yes, the Leica Vario-Elmarti-SL 24-70mm f/2.8 ASPH lens does actually perform better on Leica cameras than other L-mount lens options do. While we will delve deeper into the differences between this lens and the Sigma at a later date, this fact alone may be enough to prove it’s not simply “rehoused.” The 24-70 Art lens is compact for its specs, it seems well built, including being inclement weather-ready and it has a high quality appearance. Flare and ghosting is reasonably well controlled under normal conditions. In extreme cases with strong point sources of light within the frame flare can be a problem, with patterns of flare littering the image. This is only really an issue in very extreme cases, such as shooting into stage lighting, or when the sun is very prominent in the frame. A petal shaped lens hood is supplied, which does an excellent job of shielding the front element from extraneous light.
