About this deal

If you're still in the planning stage of your Italian itinerary, we'd recommend setting aside a full morning or afternoon for Pompeii, regardless of where you're basing yourself in the Campania region. And yet, the very act which destroyed Pompeii with such callous, brutal efficiency under an avalanche of ash and stone, would preserve it for the ages. When walking the streets of Pompeii and standing within its rooms, remember that you are standing somewhere that should have been long lost to nature and time, these are actual Roman streets and Roman buildings; the town itself was literally buried treasure for over 1,600 years!

The House of Venus in the Shell has many beautiful wall paintings, including the one that the house is named after.

For the majority though, we think 3-5 hours will probably also be your max, making it an ideal day trip activity from Naples or the Amalfi Coast. Much longer than that, especially on a hot summer’s day, will see your interest start to wane and your energy sap. The Ghost 2007): وهي رواية غموض سياسية حولت إلى فيلم بعنوان (The Ghost Writer 2010) أخرجه رومان بولانسكي، وأداه إيوان مكريجور، وبيرس بروسنان.

When we got in we were glad we’d gone on a tour as the ruins are huge and confusing with little signage – we wouldn’t have fully appreciated them even with an audio guide and definitely not with just the map and the guidebook. Ellis's team is particularly interested in a corner of the city near the Porta Stabia gate that is a bit off the beaten archaeological path. Sounds good no? Harris is good at building up the air of menace in the days preceding the eruption. Every action can be looked at as minor compared to the devastation coming and he really does a great job of creating an atmosphere of anticipation in the reader. He's also done a great job at recreating the feel of living in Roman times, as well as supplying a lot of information on Roman aqueducts giving you a sense of awe and genius for the Roman Empire. We didn't get one because, well, we've found that a tour guide can sometimes prove more restrictive for us than we'd like. We like to do lots of our own research and reading before visiting ruins, and don't like to have to rush taking photos or savouring something that captures our curiosity. Also, the experience of having an underwhelming and slightly dull tour guide in control for a couple of hours is enough to sour the experience of any place (trust us on that). Because of this, what we find in Pompeii is that every step in the development in the science of archaeology was tested out in Pompeii—with mixed results," he says.

An engaging, female-focussed novel set in ancient Pompeii, from an exciting new voice in historical fiction. It’s easy to look at weather, bad archaeology, mismanagement, and organised theft as the key factors contributing to the deteriorating conditions of Pompeii prior to the 2012 project, and tut and moan about their inevitably.

The town of Pompeii was left buried for seventeen centuries - impervious to the fall and rise of empires, the climate, and the shifting sands of time and civilisations. They were not always forgotten though, with their correct location being marked on a map in the 12th century. This is the story of a latter day Super Mario, an Italian plumber who overcomes very difficult challenges to fix the water supply to Napoli and surrounding areas before the local volcano erupts to ruin everything for everybody.Through the eyes of four characters - a young engineer, an adolescent girl, a corrupt millionaire and an elderly scientist - Robert Harris brilliantly recreates a luxurious world on the brink of destruction. Long, warm summer evenings allow for other events too, including evening walks, concerts and theatrical performances. We do fully appreciate that the juxtaposition of wandering around a two-millennia old town with a map on your 21st century device may somewhat jar…but this is a very convenient way to make a note of those places you definitely want to visit in advance and plot a personal Pompeii route. Visiting Pompeii from Naples is an easy day trip, and Napoli’s great rail connections make the train the easiest way to get to the ruins. History Extra Podcast | It’s only a 33-minute listen, so there’s no excuse for not giving this a go before you visit! In this podcast episode, historian Daisy Dunn revisits the eruption and the significance of Pompeii. There’s also this one by National Geographic.

by visiting Herculaneum, a few stops along the Circumvesuviana train line from Pompeii and another easy trip from Naples or Sorrento. Herculaneum was also destroyed when Vesuvius erupted, but it’s much quieter than Pompeii. Herculaneum is also much better preserved and many of the buildings still have their upper storey intact. Pompeii’s size is however its saving grace as sidestreets or sections can still be blissfully isolated and removed from the crowds. It’s split into nine zones or ‘regio’, and there are street signs and a few markers for points of interest, but it’s actually very easy to become lost or disoriented as you amble around. This isn’t an issue - and is a surefire way to discover your own treasures - but you may not want to eat into your allocated time with too much serendipity or having to retrace your steps on uneven Roman roads. Similarly, if you arrive at 10 or 11 am without any sense of what you want to see or which general route you’re going to follow, it will waste your time rather enhance it. We therefore highly recommend planning a little bit in advance and taking advantage of the following free itineraries and maps. During a sweltering week in late August, as Rome's richest citizens relax in their villas around Pompeii and Herculaneum, there are ominous warnings that something is going wrong. Wells and springs are failing, a man has disappeared, and now the greatest aqueduct in the world - the mighty Aqua Augusta - has suddenly ceased to flow . . .Pompeii is therefore generally regarded as being properly rediscovered in 1748, ten years after excavation work had begun at Herculaneum - a smaller town down the road which suffered the same fate. Collectively, these projects are widely viewed as starting the modern science of archaeology, and efforts were aided by the debris being generally loose and relatively easy to remove. From the very beginning, archaeologists noticed copious amounts of graffiti on the outsides of buildings. In the late 1800s, scholars began making careful copies of Latin inscriptions throughout the ancient Roman world, including Pompeii, and cataloging them. This effort is a boon to scholars like Benefiel, since more than 90 percent of Pompeii’s recorded graffiti have since been erased by exposure to the elements. Graffiti is often produced very spontaneously, with less thought than Virgil or the epic poetry,” says Taylor, a lecturer in Greek history at Trinity College in Dublin. “It gives us a different picture of ancient society.” At Piazza Esedra, a little further along from Porta Marina from the station, there is a bookshop and toilets. There’s a small police station just outside the Piazza Esedra entrance. Pompeii explodes a number of myths – from the very date of the eruption, probably a few months later than usually thought: the hygiene of the baths which must have been hotbeds of germs: and the legendary number of brothels, most likely only one, to the massive death count which was probably less than ten per cent of the population.
