The strict social code was temporarily turned on its head during Kronia, with slaves participating in the merriment as equals or even being served by their masters. The summer solstice also marked the one-month countdown to the opening of the Olympic games. Ancient Romans Hawthorn was a powerful supernatural force for good or evil and has been associated with sacrifice and protection. Another feature of this book that I just have to praise is the illustrations. They are amazing (some are downright creepy!) and they add that little extra to each chapter and the atmosphere of the scenes. I noticed that it was Holly Hinton herself who drew these illustrations…she is one talented lady! As in ‘couldn’t-go-to-sleep-until-I’ve-finished-reading’ kind of enjoyed it. As I built the piece up, I continued to glaze in the darks and then tighten things that I felt needed to be kept crisp, while allowing the softening to happen elsewhere. At some point close to the end, I signed the piece, but it turned out not to be done. I still needed a glaze or two and a couple more minor tweaks. The story follows Jamie Tuff as she discovers the truth behind the happenings at the island as well as discovers the truth of her powers. Jamie and her friends set out to save the souls that have been taken. The story is well written and has a simple plot that will keep the reader entertained. The book is more for children in the teens and such and it will appeal to their idea of fantasy and magic.The Summer Sacrifice is set on No Place Island, the one remaining Island that escaped being destroyed by the Great Goddess in her attempt to destroy mankind. Folklore told that the following saying about its leaves emerging would predict the weather for the summer.
