About this deal

Sadly, he died of cancer before he could reap the benefits of his success. Jamie believes that it should have been the start of a booming acting career. McLean was also described as a "fixer" and a "minder", meaning a bodyguard, for criminals and celebrities including Mike Reid, Boy George, and the casts of television shows such as EastEnders and The Bill. According to McLean's autobiography, his name was useful for the smooth progress of various criminal dealings, and to warn off members of the Provisional Irish Republican Army and the Mafia. [ citation needed] It isn’t a misery memoir, and there are lots of funny stories as well as the darker ones, because the Guv’nor had a sense of humour and liked practical jokes. For example, when the TV license inspector came around, he put on Val’s glasses and grabbed her romantic novel, earnestly explaining to the official that he was a reading man and didn’t own a television. The warmth and closeness of his family, despite the bad times, comes across strongly. It’s a change inevitably reflected in the non-fiction publishing landscape, as made clear by a spokesperson from John Blake, the UK publisher specialising on true crime, which is behind many of the most famous British gangster memoirs including The Guv’nor. “There [has] has clearly been an emergence of true crime that is more investigative and psychoanalytical, and this is influencing our publishing for 2020 and 2021. Moreover, the emergence of Netflix and various other mass media formats, including the incredible success of podcasts, is obviously expanding the subjects and audiences that the genre would traditionally have. But [these memoirs] will always be an important element of what we do here”. Now having read his autobiography I realize just how true that on screen presence actually was. Lenny was a real tough bloke, but also an extraverted, supremely entertaining and loving family man. His stories are incredible, and they leap directly into the reader’s imagination. They give insight into a world in which most of us will never step foot, and plenty of reminders why we wouldn’t want to.

His stepfather was a drunk and was violent towards him, his brothers, and his mother and he claims it was the reason he could summon so much hate. Aged five, she was repeatedly sexually abused by a teenage female who lived nearby. She lured Kelly to her bedroom under the pretence of playing “nurses and doctors” before pouncing. Lenny died before the premiere of the film, which was dedicated to his memory. Kelly said: “Guy Ritchie came round my mum’s when my dad was ill. As a joke he said, ‘Whatever you do, don’t die before we make the next movie.’ He also famously invited then Prime Minister Tony Blair and the Prince of Wales to a hedgehog barbecue. Lauded by many as the “Toughest Man in Britain,” Lenny McLean, without question, was as hard as nails. The 2016 documentary entitled “ The Guv’nor: The Incredible True Story of Lenny McLean,” profiles McLean as both warrior and guardian. He’s vicious and forgiving, funny, calculating, and capable of extraordinary, immediate violence. The juxtaposition of these disparate traits combined to build a formidable human being. However, one common thread permeates the film:violence. It is that violence thatcreates an unflinching profile of a complex man.

Royston Henry Shaw (11 March 1936 – 14 July 2012), also known as Roy "Pretty Boy" Shaw, Roy "Mean Machine" Shaw and Roy West, was a property investor, author and businessman from the East End of London who was formerly a criminal and Category A prisoner. During the 1970s–1980s, Shaw was active in the criminal underworld of London and was associated with the Kray twins. Shaw is best remembered today for his career as a fighter on the unlicensed boxing scene, becoming an arch-rival of Lenny McLean. [ citation needed] Early life [ edit ]

The nightmare has haunted Kelly during her adult life, causing her to self harm and develop anorexia. But Lenny went to his grave without hearing of her ordeal. She said: “I’m so proud of Dad. I don’t think I realised the impact he had on people. People slag him off and say he was a bully but it wasn’t his fault. He probably had this condition.” The fighting started with playground tussles, then after-school scraps, followed by proper training at Bedworth Labour Club. There was also a string of schoolboy amateur fights, including some for his secondary school, Nicholas Chamberlaine. Shaw routinely stabbed police informers and even slashed the throat of a former best friend while incarcerated owing to his strong belief in a "code of honour" among criminals that must not be broken. Me stepfather was a slag what used to beat us. I'd've killed him but me Mum made me promise not to on 'er deathbed. There's nothing wrong with breaking someone's jaw if they've got no manners. Manners don't cost nuthing.

Making the best of what you had, and maintaining your reputation was important in themanor. Most people would make a fuss of little Kelly and Jamie, very recognisable with theirbright red hair, because they knew they were the Guv’nor’s children. We all have a life story to tell. Some are naturally more captivating than others. And of those there are the occasional few that are so spectacular they propel the subject straight into fame. Even if that fame is borne out of infamy.

There were times I hated him and I looked at him like he was a bully. It got to the stage where I couldn’t even laugh at his jokes. We did live in fear of him, but I didn’t understand he had this condition. In 1997, mellowed if not softened by age, Bartley announced his retirement, declaring: “I’m too intelligent to fight.” In his teens he started to rub shoulders with figures in London’s criminal underworld and became a feared nightclub enforcer and a friend of the Krays.
