About this deal

Ryzen Threadripper PRO processors are purpose-built to support all types of workstation users and the mission-critical software applications they rely on each day. Which one is for you? Let's take a look: AMD hit the market with four distinct versions of AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ PRO processors with varying core and thread counts to serve a variety of businesses and users. To ensure support for everyone, Lenovo launched multiple models of the ThinkStation P620 Tower Workstation, each sporting a different Threadripper PRO CPU.

Threadripper Pro Review: An Upgrade Over Regular AMD Threadripper Pro Review: An Upgrade Over Regular

Our testing focuses on the one Ryzen Threadripper Pro processor we've managed to get our mitts on so far, the 3955WX, a 16-core/32-thread chip that is a sensible choice for any kind of demanding workflow. Our test platform is the Lenovo ThinkStation P620 with Windows 10 Pro, 32GB of DDR4-3200 ECC memory, a 512GB PCI Express 3.0 SSD boot drive, and a 5GB Nvidia Quadro P2200 graphics card. The EPYC 7F52 has 16 cores and each core has 16MB of L3 cache for 256MB total. You can clearly see the difference between the frequency optimized 16-core EPYC 7002 part and this Threadripper Pro 3955WX frequency optimized 16-core workstation part. Based on AMD Labs testing as of January 31, 2022 using the Ansys CFX benchmark to compare the Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5995X reference system configured with 8x32GB DDR4, NVIDIA Quadro RTX A5000, 1TB SSD, Win 11 vs. a similarly configured BOXX APEXX4 workstation with an Intel® Xeon® W-3375. Results may vary. CGP-26 Software & Science: The Threadripper PRO 3995WX processor can significantly reduce compile times for complex software builds by spreading the work over multiple threads and cores. 5 The same parallel processing approach can speed the training of deep neural networks, while support for up to 2 TB of memory aids in calculations involving extensive data sets. The following two processors have no Threadripper equivalents, but also represent a slightly different scenario that we’ll explore in this review. Both the 3955WX and 3945WX, despite being part of the big Threadripper Pro family, only use two chiplets in their design: 8 core per chipet for the 3955 WX and 6 core per chiplet for the 3945WX. This means these processors only have 64 MB of L3 cache, making them somewhat identical to the Ryzen 9 3950X and Ryzen 9 3900X, except the IO die means there is eight channels of memory and 128 PCIe lanes here. One of the more interesting aspects of this CPU is the topology. With 16 cores only 64MB of onboard L3 cache, it seems significantly different than the 3975WX (32 core) and 3995WX (64 core.) Indeed this is a 4MB/ core part like the 3995WX, however, that presents a challenge with the layout. AMD EPYC (and Threadripper Pro) CPUs effectively have an I/O die that handles the PCIe and memory controllers, and then up to eight x86 compute dies surrounding the I/O die. Manufacturing: For busy engineers, the AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper PRO 3995WX processor can reduce simulation 1 and render times 2 to get more things done. Slicer software for 3D printing, for example, is multi-threaded and benefits from having multiple available cores. Design modeling uses fewer cores but gains from the CPU's fast cycle times. The effectiveness of cooling solutions is dependent upon a number of factors, including ambient air temperature and the configuration of the system, components and cooling solution. It is the users’ obligation to ensure operation of the processor within the applicable AMD product specifications. Originally, I bought 4x64 GB ECC RDIMM because I thought 256 GB might be enough, and I wanted to leave some empty RAM slots to populate with 128 GB RDIMMs if those ever became cost-effective. (Right now, 128 GB RDIMMs are about triple the price of 64 GB.)
