About this deal

Almost 600 years ago in the Belgian village of Hoegaarden, a band of monks developed this unique recipe. Prior to this new recipe, wheat beers were quite sour; that is, until the Hoegaarden monks started experimenting with orange peel and coriander from the colony Curaçao: a divine discovery that led to the world-famous Hoegaarden recipe and unique citrus flavor. Hoegaarden – An unfiltered Belgian Witbier (ABV 4.9%). “Naturally cloudy with a pale golden color, followed by aromas and flavors of soft wheat, citrus, orange and coriander spice; delicately creamy with a smooth crisp, clean finish.” – LCBO, Hoegaarden Description

There are a lot of wheat beers out there, most of them can be split into either German wheat beers, or Belgian wheat beers. Hoegaarden is a Belgian wheat beer. These beers tend to use a lot of flavourings. Particularly coriander, nutmeg, orange peel, and similar spices. Featured below is not only an example of a recipe that would go well with Hoegaarden, but a recipe that actually involves using Hoegaarden.Nice pop of lemon and orange upfront, green banana, coriander, doughy malt, hay. Vanilla on the finish. Clean and crisp. Eazy Peazy from @amundsenbrewery . Aroma is full on tropical - juicy mango and pineapple, citrus orange, resinous pine. Tropical fruit sweetness when we taste, with more citrus coming through and bringing in the bitterness, along with some earthy notes free-beer.co.uk/amundsen-eaz… @FreeBeer_UK - Jul 20 Sadly, Hoegaarden simply cannot be gluten-free. It contains malted barley and wheat, both of which contain gluten. If you are gluten-intolerant then you will probably want to avoid wheat beers full stop! Is Hoegaarden Vegan? LCBO. (n.d.). Their creation was an inspired beer with a refreshing flavor and captivating aroma, unlike any in the world. Celis decided instead to sell them the brewery, and with the proceeds, he moved to the United States, where he set up the Celis Brewery in Austin, Texas, to continue making wheat beer to what he described as the original Hoegaarden recipe. It was later acquired by Miller Brewing. Celis never fully relocated to Texas, but his daughter and son-in-law, who operated the brewery, did. Miller ultimately closed the brewery and sold the equipment and brand names to Michigan Brewing Company. If we’re to believe most million-dollar beer advertisements, brews should be consumed in frosty mugs, ideally in proximity to mountains and/or bikini-clad women. Hoegaarden doesn’t pander to that stereotype. Years before craft beer had us all nervously rethinking beer-serving temperature and glassware, Hoegaarden was asking the Budweiser faithful to take a chance on an unfiltered, citrusy-spiced European recipe with ancient religious roots and little to no apparent sex appeal. And it worked. Hoegaarden is both 6 centuries and 50 years old. This article needs additional citations for verification. Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Not a pleasant taste. Wheat beers are one of the easiest beers to pair with a wide variety of foods just keep in mind they are low intensity so can easily be over-powered by very flavourful dishes. Mild shellfish work really well as do dishes that run with a wit's hint of lemon and spices.

It was a Milkman, Pierre Celis, that used the traditional ingredients of yeast, wheat, hops, coriander, orange peel, and water to recreate the white beer in 1965. Several brewers offered to buy from Pierre, and in the end, the white beer ended in the hands of the then Interbrew, now known as Anheuser-Busch InBev. Probably the largest brewer in the world, Anheuser Busch has sealed Hoegaarden’s place as one of the best Belgian white beers worldwide.verifyErrors }}{{ message }}{{ /verifyErrors }}{{ The flavor is much maltier than the aroma, with a touch of the coriander and some bitterness coming through in the finish. Still quite bright up front, but not nearly as much orange comes through in the flavor compared to the aroma. There is also an herbal and floral flavor, likely from hops. The sweetness becomes a bit much after a while. It’s one of the limited-edition seasonal beers, brewed lager style to contain very low alcohol content. The Agrum beer is made from hops, yeast, wheat, water, and the Agrum fruit. A decade or so ago, Hoegaarden wheat beer was my tipple of choice. Bursting with flavour and very different from the standard bitters and lagers I was previously drinking, it would sometimes confuse my fellow drinkers. “Why are you drinking that banana beer?”, I would get asked as I was lifting a hexagonal glass to my lips. The taste was certainly one that took a while to get used to, but opened me up to a world of wheat beers that previously I didn’t know about. Today, the wheat beer is brewed in different variations, including Hoegaarden white, Rosée, Cherry, Agrum, Citrus, and Speciale. All of these are reviewed in the following headings.
