About this deal

Series Continuity Error: For the books, the story takes place right after "Percy's Promise", which, despite the rest of Percy the Small Engine being adapted beforehand, wasn't shown until Season Three. Given that, it may be a different and unseen time Percy braved bad weather to help Thomas. "Down the Mine" is also referenced. Modified models of the Coast Guard and a shrimper from TUGS appear at Suddery Coastal Village, making this the first episode to use TUGS models. Gordon Takes a Tumble | Henry and the Elephant | Percy Takes a Plunge | Thomas and the Special Letter | James and the Trouble with Trees | Spic and Span | Diesel from Thomas to the Rescue | Emily's Adventure Get Out!: Henry tells Bill and Ben to leave the sheds which are reserved for the Fat Controller's engines. Although being adapted for the third series, the events of this episode were mentioned in the second series episode Percy Takes the Plunge. Thus, this episode most likely takes place before the aforementioned episode as it did in the Railway Series.

The 1993 Strand Home Video release of the front cover has the Britt Allcroft logo smaller, while the Time-Life edition has the logo larger. Despite the yellow sun on the original covers saying "Stories as seen on Shining Time Station", the stories Daisy, Percy's Predicament and George Carlin's dub of Saved From Scrap were never seen on said show. Ringo Starr's US dub was not released on home media until 2001, when it was included on Best of Percy. This recording was also used on a DVD that came with the Take Along playset based on this episode. It was also first heard on an audiobook of A Cow on the Line and Other Thomas the Tank Engine Stories. When Thomas is on Toby's Old Tramway, Clarabel is facing the wrong way. Then in the next shot, Annie is facing the wrong way. The next morning, Percy is arranged to be taken to the Works for cleaning and mending on Henry's goods train. Henry finds the incident very amusing, telling Percy he needs more determination and suggesting that he will like it better next time. Percy, however, is determined that there will not be a "next time". Some of the 1995 Anchor Bay tapes have the Strand Home Video logo instead of the Video Treasures logo. In the shot of Percy's driver and fireman during the scene where Percy is in the flooded water, the fence behind them is submerged; but in the close-up of the fireman, the fence is completely above the water. This changes again in the shot of the driver, fireman and guard carrying the wooden planks through the water.

In the close-up of Percy being pushed, a reflection of a hand can be seen in the water pushing the train. Additionally, Percy's eyes are wonky. The first time that an engine falls into the sea and has to wait until the tide is high enough to be rescued; the second is the fifth series episode, Something in the Air. The description says, "See what happens when Percy ends up to his funnel in water..." but the water only went up to his chin. This is the first US DVD release where the title differs greatly from the VHS title. This was also repeated on the Henry and the Elephant DVD, as well as the 2009 Lionsgate re-releases of Hop on Board: Songs and Stories, Really Useful Engines, Harvey to the Rescue, The Runaway Engine and Pop Goes the Diesel. Adaptation Induced Plothole: Percy tells Bill and Ben the events of " Percy's Promise", which wouldn't occur until the following series. The Eight Famous Engines didn't have this issue, as it was written directly after Percy the Small Engine.Once Done, Never Forgotten: Henry, after being teased by Percy for being afraid of the rain, lampshades that no one will ever forget the time he wouldn't leave the tunnel because he thought the rain will spoil his paint.

Despite being the episode title and focus, the episode, Percy Takes the Plunge is actually the seventh and final episode on this DVD. In the original story and first script, the floorboards were actually extracted from Clarabel. A non-sentient brake van was added in the final adaptation to avoid the implication the guard was using an axe on a sentient coach. When Thomas explains to Percy about the sign, a studio light can be seen reflected off his smokebox. When George Carlin's dub aired on the Shining Time Station episode, Schemer Goes Camping, the last few seconds of the episode were cut.

There is a different scene of the coastal village with the sky being blue and no people being close to the house. Before Percy goes straight into the water, his brakes are applied despite his driver and fireman having jumped out. Then, right about when he falls into the water, his wheels are moving again. The fade effect and scene of Percy arriving at Elsbridge with Annie and Clarabel are removed and replaced with a cut and an extended shot of Thomas waiting for Percy. Insane Troll Logic: After Thomas tells Percy not to go past the danger board and recounts his own experience, Percy concludes that the board is wrong because "I can't see a mine". The Target exclusive DVD version featured a watery pouch behind the transparent image of the front cover. It also came in a clear glass-style DVD case.
