The amount of detail and thought that went into these is incredible - they're planned out down to the plumbing and storage solutions, and don't get me started on the mill and the dairy. My favorite illustrations were of their homes; they were extremely detailed and just looked like a fun place to be. The tales involve conflict resolution within nature or exploration, and/or the adventures of working together to achieve a common goal. Poppy's Babies Dusty and Poppy, who were married in the Summer Story have just had their first bundle of joy - or should I say bundles?A love of cooking goes hand in hand with the many fun feasts, picnics, and festivals that go on in Brambly Hedge. When I was a kid I used to live in Northern California in this super small town where there really wasn't much to do besides go to the movies and go to the library (or in the summer there was the swimming pool). Sometimes, that smell inspires me to bundle little girls into winter coats and froggie boots and take a stroll through the neighborhood, where forsythia buds stud certain lucky branches and the puddles look blue in the morning light. In this collection the mice have many adventures, but they always have time for fun and relaxation too. The Four-Year-Old, on the other hand, would prefer to spend those hours staring at the illustration of the room at the top of the Secret Staircase, with its spider webs, columns, detailed tapestries, mice statues, and especially the little suit of mouse armor standing guard on the side.

From birthday picnics to Naming Ceremonies to weddings, the mice of Brambly Hedge eagerly await any opportunity to celebrate.I'd never heard of them, but as I'm always on the look out for new books to read with The Four-Year-Old, I spent a week or two hunting them down. Brambly Hedge is a series of illustrated children's books by Jill Barklem, recounting the adventures of a community of mice who live together in the tranquil surroundings of the English countryside. I'm not sure what triggered it but I had this vivid memory of me at my old library reading these books. There are ongoing themes of friendship, community spirit and sharing throughout the whole timeless collection.
