In the movie, when Mattel learns that Barbie and Ken have escaped Barbie Land, the employees panic that history is repeating itself after the ‘Skipper incident.’ Skipper was the first member of Barbie’s family to hit the shelves in 1964, as her younger sister, who was meant to soften Barbie’s sexualised image by turning her into a domesticated older sibling. Over the years, Skipper was re-released as a teen and began babysitting herself, as seen most recently in the computer-animated television film, Barbie: Skipper and the Big Babysitting Adventure.
