The Sony WH-1000XM5 look rather different to their predecessors and I initially thought them a little basic in appearance. In time, however, I’ve come to appreciate their simple elegance to the point where I actually prefer them to the XM4. At 254g, the Sony WH-1000XM4 are a mere one gram lighter than the WH-1000XM3, but that weight is distributed more thoughtfully. The plastic earcup housing has been slimmed down in favour of adding additional padding to the pleather lining the inside of the cups, while the headband padding is slightly thinner. The section connecting the headband to the earcups has been shortened too, resulting in a fit that is better contoured to your head. They sound fantastic, have effective noise-cancelling and long battery life. They support multipoint Bluetooth 5 for connecting two devices at once, high-res music with the LDAC format and an instant ambient sound mode for listening for announcements, too. In addition to Hi-Res audio support over LDAC, the WH-1000XM5 support Sony’s 360 Reality Audio and can create a Dolby Atmos surround sound experience when connected to one of the company’s Bravia XR televisions via its WLA-NS7 wireless transmitter. This isn’t something I was able to test but is a nice bit of ecosystem-specific compatibility for those who do own a premium Sony TV. The Sony WH-1000XM4 build upon the impressive functionality of the WH-1000XM3 by adding a number of new features, all of which successfully enhance the user experience. At present, it’s only available through 360 by Deezer, nugs.net and TIDAL and I tested it using the latter’s 360 Reality Audio playlist. Individual aspects of songs sound like they’re coming from different positions around your head but the technology works far better on certain songs than others. Treat yourself and add an extra layer of protection to those award winning headphones and fully customise them without compromising the stylish look and feel of the Sony WH1000XM4. The WH-1000XM5 share many traits with the model that came before them but have received tweaks in a few notable areas. The most obvious change is a structural one. The WH-1000XM5 have what Sony describes as a “noiseless” design with a stepless slider along with seamless swivels and hangers connecting the headband to the earcups. We use high quality glue that does no harm to your headphones and doesn't leave any residual glue after removal They don’t look and feel quite as solid or premium as some competitors but they fold up for travel and appear durable in lightweight plastic. They are not neutral, with a default sound that is more mid-bass heavy than some competitors, but they produce well-controlled, deep and full bass, warm mids and sparkling high notes. Unlike many rivals, they have a full equaliser in the app to customise the sound to your liking, as well as music enhancement systems such as Sony’s DSEE Extreme upscale audio to revive tones lost because of compression at the expense of battery life.When compared to the competition, I would still give a slight edge to the Bose QC45 when it comes to dampening voices but in every other respect, the WH-1000XM5 are at least their equal and, when it comes to intelligent noise cancellation, far superior. The Sony WH-1000XM3 were best-in-class when it came to noise cancellation but this model is even better at regulating the amount of external noise that makes it through to your ears. With noise cancelling in full effect, the WH-1000XM4 let you slip away into your own audio world, free of all-but the loudest and highest-pitched annoyances. Customers may need to update their Sony | Headphones Connect app for this software to be activated.
The Sony WH-1000XM4 take everything the third-generation model did so well and crank it up another notch. Audio quality and noise cancellation have been upgraded, while intelligent new features improve the user experience with no compromises elsewhere. To say that the Sony WH-1000XM4 have a lot to live up to would be an understatement. Their predecessors, the WH-1000XM3, have sat proudly atop many of our best headphones lists since their release in late 2018 and, despite numerous attempts, not one other set of cans has been able to usurp them as the kings of over-ear noise-cancelling headphones. Until now. The headphones last for up to 30 hours between charges with noise cancelling turned on, which is 10 hours longer than many competitors. Turn it off and they last up to 38 hours or 22 hours with the ambient sound mode active. They last up to 24 hours of voice calling, too. Speak-to-Chat pauses your audio when your voice is detected, allowing you to hold a conversation without missing a second of whatever you’re listening to. It’s particularly handy in an office environment but those prone to singing along to songs will want to turn it off, which can be done in-app or by holding two outspread fingers on the right earcup. The WH-1000XM5 never missed a beat in terms of registering my actions. As soon as I got up and started moving around, my settings would switch from staying to walking and the same proved true when moving between different registered locations. The technology functioned brilliantly on both the WH-1000XM4 and WF-1000XM5 and works equally well here.
The new form factor won’t be to everyone’s tastes and the inability to fold the headphones will put some people off, as will the higher RRP. That price hike is reflective of global trends, however, so I’m inclined to let Sony off the hook on this one. Sony did not comment on the use of recycled materials and does not publish environmental impact reports for headphones. It publishes annual sustainability reports and its roadmap to have zero environmental impact by 2050. Observations Bluetooth connectivity now comes courtesy of version 5.2 with codec support extending to SBC, AAC and Sony LDAC. The latter provides access to Hi-Res streaming quality on most Android devices but can’t be used if you’re connected to two devices via Bluetooth Multipoint.
