When I lecture on the mathematical theory behind board games, Quarto is one of my favourite examples. It’s a commercially available board game for two players: you can see an example board to the right. Quarto is distinctive in that there is only one set of common pieces, rather than a set for one player and a different set for the other. It is therefore an impartial game.

But that’s not the case. In fact, it’s the mechanic that has you choosing a piece for your opponent that’s absolutely genius. This forces you to not only think about what you are giving your opponent and all the places they can drop it, but also in what position that will leave you. You also need to consider which pieces your opponent will have left to hand you. At a Christmas party I attended a couple of weeks ago, I discovered a classic board game called Quarto. In fact, the host of the party who's worked for a major gaming company in the past asked me if I knew how to build it as a computer application. I discounted myself as a non-game-developer who only builds business applications, but then followed that by saying that if it is only a 2D game, it was simple to build. So, the challenge was on!!! Actually, it doesn’t matter if, like me, you can’t visualise this 4D cube! Just like with the 3D cube above we remembered that one square was on top of the other, so we remember the relationships between the squares here. To make it easy, I’ve labelled the top and bottom of the layers in the third dimension using top and bottom and the top and bottom of the layers in the fourth dimension using Top and Bottom.

Rule 2. Know always where properties can potentially win. For the basic game, there are 10 winning areas (4 rows, 4 columns, 2 diagonals). For the advanced game, there are an additional 9 square areas. In the basic game, each piece will be in 2 or 3 of these areas, while in the advanced game it is 4 or 7 areas. As soon as 2 pieces are in the same area, identify all the ways that something could possibly win there. This is critical to know when there are 3 pieces in an area (a property being set up to win). You can get Quarto in either the regular size or Quarto Mini if you’d like more of a travel version. I actually think I prefer the mini size as the smaller components work fine and I like the portability it offers. If you are looking for a game that you can play with just about anyone, then give Quarto a look. The teaching sheet proposes several intermediate exercises to get pupils accustomed to the different pieces of the game and teach them to group pieces according to a common criterion.Quarto from Gigamic’s Abstract Strategy Games reminded me of an Indiana Jones-esque crypto puzzle when I first saw the wooden pieces. Like I was going to be constructing some sort of dart gun or secure document carrier. So far it’s not too scary, right? Now draw a second ‘cube’ next to your first (as below).
