About this deal

The building is beautiful- what space is available to use? How would you describe the style of interior decoration and where are the pieces from? As we hope you can appreciate the information given here is given in good faith but if you do spot an error or omission please let us know by using one of these options - As a unicorn newbie, I really had no idea where to begin. But the company of one of Scotland’s leading tour guides was as good a place to start as any. The names Nelson, Cook, Blake, Wood, Duncan, Dibdin and Napier appear at the wallhead frieze. The building cost about ?12,000 and is a significant part of Dundee's maritime history, reflecting concern for the social and moral welfare of sailors. The cast-iron sunburst motif is perhaps modelled on that in the famous Sailors' Home in Liverpool (demolished). A Tariff card of the 1920s states that use by sailors waned after the 1st World War, and that accommodation was now also provided for 'Commercial Travellers, Chauffeurs, Transport Drivers, Soldiers, Cyclists and Holiday-makers'. There were 34 single and 11 twin bedded rooms, 8 bathrooms, hot and cold water and electric light. It is now (1994) used as a hostel; the chapel is in a dilapidated condition. External Links The Robin Day Polo Stools in the canteen for example are original frames with new shells. I sourced some of the original 70s John Madin desks when Birmingham Central Library was clearing out ready for demolition. The dedicated desk area at the top of the building is furnished with desks by the legendary Cotswolds furniture maker Gordon Russell. Chairs are particularly comfortable at Unicorn House and we built up our collection of preloved high quality office chairs by brands like Wilkhan Modus, Steelcase and Boss Design over the period of the build.

Bachmann, Hornby, Peco, Accurascale, Heljan, Rapido Uk, Gaugemaster, Metcalfe, Ratio, Wills, Modelscene, Roundhouse, Oxford Diecast, Corgi, Scalextric, Harburn Hamlet, Farish, Dapol, Woodland Scenics Who are the people / companies you have using space at UH? Could you tell us a little bit about what they do please? We have a very diverse group of members at Unicorn House. The current members include an online retail entrepreneur, a digital health company, a head hunter, property developers, a social enterprise strategist, management consultants, a user experience expert, social media companies, a writer and three lawyers! If you were to ask them ‘Why Unicorn House?’ I think that they would all say that the primary motivation for joining was to work in a space that allows them to work independently but with company around and a sense of community. From the early eighteenth century are the doorcase, dining room panelling and staircase. Later changes have been few – additional panelling in the front hall is probably late nineteenth-century, while documented alterations in 1971 were relatively minor in scope.Until recently, all talk of unicorns belonged in the glitteriest corner of a children’s playroom. Or on a rainbow-coloured cereal box. It’s a subject rarely cerebral enough to merit debate, but these days, wide-eyed unicorns are everywhere. In particular, Donaldson worked with Historic Environment Scotland on the seven-year refurbishment of Stirling Castle, recreating the magnificent Stirling Heads – 16th-Century oak medallions carved with images of kings, queens and nobles – as well as a 1.8m by 1.2m ceiling boss of King James V’s crest and coat of arms for the King’s Bed Chamber. Unicorns, of course, are front and centre.

Bedfordshire, Huntingdonshire, and Peterborough (Pevsner Architectural Guides) (Pevsner Architectural Guides: Buildings of England) Not that any of that matters to Hanley, who saw his first unicorn more than 60 years ago, when growing up in the city’s Canongate district near the Palace of Holyroodhouse. According to the National Museum of Scotland, medieval legend further suggests only a king could hold a unicorn captive because of the supposed danger it posed, something that may have given rise to its widespread adoption. What is known is James II wholeheartedly embraced the legend, and the unicorn became the symbol of purity and power that Scottish kings and nobility identified with in the 15th Century. Over time, this led to the unicorn becoming officially recognised as Scotland’s national animal. Over time, the creature came to represent Jesus Christ, while others believed it could only be tamed by virgins. By the 12th Century, the unicorn had made its first appearance in Scotland, placed on the royal coat of arms by William I (also known as William the Lion). This enigmatic creature has an equally complex and convoluted history that spans some 3,000 years. Considered real by the Ancient Greeks, the horse-like quadrupeds were first mentioned in the 4th Century BC by classical historian Ctesias in Indica, a book on India in which he describes the creature as a ‘wild ass’ with a horn sprouting from its temple. There is no typical day at Unicorn House but there is a rhythm to the way we operate. We catch up with Catherine Scudamore, Founder of Unicorn House – the beautiful, relaxed and very welcoming co-working space in the heart of the Cotswolds. To curate a similar look I would recommend local companies like Original House in Calmsden, Antiques Emporium at Griffin Mill in Stroud, Laura Long contemporary art, Heugah Interiors, Rachel Cropper in Tetbury, Oops a Daisy and Roses in Cirencester for plants and Cotswold Tiles in Cirencester. Everywhere you go in Scotland you can see them,” Hanley told me. “You just need to know where to look. Today, people read history through a 21st-Century lens – be it social media or whatever – and we miss the bigger picture as to how this all came together. Yet there’s a definite thread to follow. The unicorn is a symbol built on an ideology, and learning about it opens doors and surprises you. Even I find it almost unexplainable at times.” INTERIOR: Home; largely unaltered, scale and platt staircase with decorative cast-iron panel balusters and Jacobean style newel posts, round-headed niches at landings, some decorative plaster cornices. Chapel; derelict, but panelled gallery remains. Statement of InterestThose who have practiced can then shower and head off to their own workspaces or members can settle down for a day in the House.
