We have loved Anomia for years – even before we started reviewing games in 2015. So I was really excited to see a new version, although I was a little nervous about what “pop culture” might mean. I’m really not good with knowing pop musicians and actors. Anomia Kids is simple to play. Draw a card and flip it over for all to see. Does the colored symbol on your card match another player’s? If so, be the first to shout a word that starts with the same sound as the image on your opponent’s card. Easy, right? Beware – you may find that your brain can do some pretty silly things under pressure!

Not to mention there’s a lot of screaming in the game as players try to spew out some answer. And if a youngster’s on the other end of that adult frantically pointing their way shouting out crazy stuff, it can be pretty intimidating. Notice that the card displays some text and a symbol. (If any Wild Cards are drawn in the next few steps, set them aside and draw again, we'll get to Wild Cards in #7).When the Draw Piles are depleted, the person with the most cards in their Winning Pile wins the round. There are also wild cards that may flip out; so rather than a player’s play pile, put those in a central area near the draw piles so everyone can see. You’ll cover up any previous wild cards, as well.

However, even with that little downside chances are you won’t be playing it every day for weeks on end, so that may not be a worry at all. Rather, plays of it will be spaced far enough apart that we’ll get to experience that anxious brain-freeze all over again. When the symbols on two players' cards match, they must Face-Off with one another. This is the heart of the game. A Face-Off consists of giving a correct example of the person, place, or thing on your opponent's card, before they can do the same for your card.

This continues until two symbols match, with players continuing to add to their pile so only the top card is currently visible. We knew we wanted to play this game with at least some of our kids, too. We did expect there to be some difficulties with domain knowledge across generations. If two players tie during a Face-Off, a third player will draw a card and flip it over for the two tied players. In this case, the two tied players are attempting to give an answer for the same card.
