About this deal

Use the table below to find the correct tube using the sizing columns. The ETRTO (metric) column is the most accurate and these figures (eg. 32-622) will also be shown on your corresponding tyres sidewall. The inch marking (e.g. 28 x 1.40) states the approximate outer diameter (28 inches) and the tire width (1.40 inches). Another inch marking is 28 x 1 5/8 x 1 3/8 (approximate outer diameter x tire height x tire width); it is also common. In Europe, 28 inches is a traditional size for touring bicycles. In many countries it is even the most frequent tire size used. In countries outside Europe the rim diameter of 622 mm is only rarely used. Bicycle travelers who want to buy spare tires for a 28-inch touring bicycle anywhere in the world, can tell you a thing or two about it. There’s often the name of the tire manufacturer (for example, Schwalbe). Plus, there should be the tire code. This will either be metric, imperial, or ISO/ETRTO. The diameter needs to be the same (e.g. 700 or 26”) but the tube’s width will vary depending on the amount you inflate them (like a kid’s balloon).

The ideal relationship between tyre and rim section is about 1.8 to 1, but any tyre from 1.4 to 2.2 times should fit – always provided that the bead diameters correspond. There are many different types of inner tube available so it is important that you get the right tube for your bike and to suit the riding that you are doing. How would I choose the best inner tube for my tyres? The initial two-digit number is the tyre section and roughly indicates the tyre width. Its actual width is normally less, but varies according to how the tyre is designed and the width of rim to which it is fitted. But the height of the tyre usually corresponds quite closely to tyre section, so overall diameter approximately equals the bead diameter plus twice the section. Sometimes you can’t find any ISO size on a tyre, only the old-school markings. Although they’re familiar they can be confusing. Tyres of the same size may come with lots of different markings: 28×1¼×15/8, 28×1¾×1¼ or 700×32C, for example, which are all 32-622. the first is the width of the tire in millimeters and the second is the diameter of the tire in millimeters. It ‘ll come as no surprise that there are bicycle tires in many different forms. There are big differences in pattern, size and above target. You can buy everything from studded tires and tires for BMX bikes to regular tires with a different pattern for adult and children’s bikes. Another reason not to exceed the 2.2 limit on road is that a more bulbous tyre can deflect side ways with a noticeable effect on control and road holding. Conversely, fitting a tyre of less than 1.4 times the rim section will result in a harsh ride and more rolling drag than a larger tyre at the same pressure. Tubeless tyres The Dunlop valve, also known as a Woods is a variation of pneumatic valve that is rarely used on modern bikes. However they were once popular. They look like a cross between the two valves, with a wider lower section, like the Schrader, then a collar and a narrow top section, like the Presta. As the rim drilling is the same for both Woods and Schrader, it is easy to replace the older tubes with the more modern variety. How can I choose the right valve length? If the rim is not marked with its bead diameter you can read this from the tyre – it’s the one dimension they have in common. You must make sure you replace your inner tubes with a tube that is the right size according to the diameter and width for your tyre. The size is almost always written somewhere on the sidewall of the tyre. Inner tubes typically state a wheel diameter and width range for which they will work, e.g. 26 x 1.95-2.125", indicating that the tube is intended to fit a 26 inch tyre with a width of between 1.95 inches and 2.125 inches. Inch dimensions are widely used in both MTB sport and English language countries. Therefore, we will continue to use these specifications for all tires. But only in decimal form, e.g. 26 x 2.25. Experience tells us that nowadays very few users are familiar with the classical fractional inch dimensions, such as 28 x 1 5/8 x 1 3/8. Both tire sizes have the same inner diameter of 622 mm and can therefore be fitted on the same rims.

If you crouch down by the side of one of your bike wheels and take a look at the sidewall you’ll be able to get all the information you need – simple as that. There is some overlap in sizes between 650b gravel and mountain bike tyres, but gravel tyres are usually sold in metric sizes as listed above. All tyres are marked with a pressure. Sometimes this is an absolute maximum that nobody should need to exceed, or sometimes only a recommended maximum that may be exceeded by heavier riders (such as tandemists). On the other hand, they’re much more fragile and more awkward to fit as they’re floppier than butyl tubes.

Tubes

As well as coming in pretty colours, latex inner tubes offer lower weight and rolling resistance than butyl inner tubes. They’re relatively expensive though and heat build-up can cause issues if you’re using rim brakes on long descents. Simon Bromley/Immediate Media If you have carbon rims on a bike with rim brakes, you also need to be careful not to drag your brakes on long descents because overheating can cause latex tubes to fail. Some wheel makers recommend against using latex tubes with their rims.
