On reaching Liverpool, they soon realise that they are too young to join the services, so rather than admit defeat and go home, they scour Liverpool looking for a job. I love Katie Flynn books - they are usually enthralling, heartbreaking and full of plot twists and turns to keep ones interest but not be predictable or boring There, she reconnects with long lost family - but will she be able to uncover the truth that tore them apart all those years ago? Of course there is a bit of romance along the way although Cadi is fiercely independent and doesn’t need a man, so will take a fair bit of persuasion to enter a relationship!

Katie Flynn is the pen name of the much-loved writer, Judy Turner, who published over ninety novels in her lifetime. Judy's unique stories were inspired by hearing family recollections of life in Liverpool during the early twentieth century, and her books went on to sell more than eight million copies. Judy passed away in January 2019, aged 82. The girls are left looking for work and eventually secure jobs in a local pub. Life takes different turns for the girls, as they relish their independence and we follow their adventures along the way. In her darkest hour, Cadi is comforted by her friends, and with their support and guidance she begins to see a light at the end of the tunnel. But she will face more than one unexpected turn along the way. When she got older, she decided that she wanted to join a writing group. She joined a writing circle and it helped not only inspire and focus her but got her started on writing short stories and articles and working on her writing. She started writing novels in 1971, but only because there was a strike that got rid of her main income and this was the catalyst for her to turn to fiction. Against their parents wishes, they travel to Liverpool with their heads full of adventure, and the intention of joining up. As they’re both underage, they’re immediately turned away. With their hopes scuppered, it seems they will have to return home with their tails between their legs. Then fate leads them to The Greyhound pub, managed single-handedly by Maria, since her husband left for war.

Also for the added romance is Jez, who had rescued them from the hands of a drunken man, and now has his sights firmly on Cadi. I did feel rather sorry for poor Poppy at this point as all the boys seem to fall for Cadi.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, and Libby is on the cusp of making a decision that could jeopardise her future when a local boy saves her from ruin. Katie Flynn is a published author and the pen name used by Judy Turner. She has written under a few different pen names, including Judith Arden, Lydia Balmain, Judy Turner, and Judith Saxton. Under her different pen names she was able to release around 90 books. 27 of those novels were composed under the name of Flynn. She passed away in 2019. I just loved the personalities of the girls. They could be any friends anywhere which for me makes the story so believable and something I could relate to, as haven’t we all had a best friend we would go out of our comfort zone with? Two ordinary girls wanting to try to make a better life for themselves. And perhaps help the war effort. From here we meet some colorful characters. Some friendly and some not so, the book covers domestic violence, and jealously. This port came under constant fire during the war and is a neat metaphor for the bombshells dropping around them as they try to make their way in a place which could swallow their homestead many times over.
