The Sony XDR-P1 has a built-in rechargeable battery that offers up to 15 hours of battery life. You can also plug it into the mains to power the radio or charge the battery.

Don’t expect the most impressive sound quality in the world, or a build quality with the finest materials, but the Majority doesn’t feel cheap or low-quality. Ultimately, this is a fantastic piece of kit for a price anyone can afford. Ensure the unit is in working mode (i.e. listening to DAB/FM Radio). Press and hold the ‘Info/Menu’ button (Ref.8) for 1-2 seconds to open the “Set Menu” option. When you are listening to a DAB/DAB+ radio station with good signal, you can press the ‘Info/Menu’ button (Ref.8) repeatedly to show the different programme information.

The hour digits for the alarm will flash, press ‘<<’ or ‘>>’ button to change the hour and press the ‘Enter/Snooze’ button to confirm.

Easy set-up and auto-scanning comes as standard, while no less than 20 preset slots allow you to make instant customisations based on the stations you like listening to the most. If you intend to take your personal digital radio outside for alfresco audio enjoyment, pay special attention to the build quality. Look for radios with waterproof housing that will withstand rain and splashes (perhaps whilst having a relaxing time in an inflatable hot tub).

You can power this radio with the mains or with four AA batteries, though batteries don’t last long before they need replacing or recharging. This radio was only released in February 2018, so we don’t know how long it will last. Often cheaper products such as this start to have issues after 6 months or so of use but given the Little Shelford’s low price this wouldn’t be the end of the world. There are lots of reasons why you might want a battery-operated radio. You might want something to listen to while gardening, camping or on the beach, or something to have on hand in case of emergencies. It’s also something you could easily buy your grandparents, thanks to its simplistic functionality and set up.

Press the ‘<<’ or ‘>>’ button (Ref.3/4) in the “Set Menu” screen to scroll through to the sub-option of “Language”.Press the ‘Preset’ (Ref.6) button to open Preset Recall settings. Do not hold down the button as this will open Preset Store settings. The Roberts R9993 is an inexpensive AM/FM radio that has better battery life than DAB alternatives.
