WHAT TYPE OF METAXA SHOULD I USE? The third ingredient used in crafting Metaxa is an herbal extract. The complete list of elements in the extract is known to only a handful of people. Only one batch of this type of brandy is made per year. The added distillates are aged for as long as 30 years, giving it incredible flavors rich in oaky tastes and even hinting at cigar tobacco. Getting any of the type of Metaxa is going to cost you, as is made partially from some of the originally barreled Mextaxa wine. It is an incredibly rare brandy that can be aged for as long as 80 or more years. The flavors, aroma, and smoothness are one of the kind and you won’t find this sort of mix very often. The flavour of the Metaxa AEN Cask No 2 Despina is a revival of the old. It brings the true heritage and flavour from the old days to a few that will appreciate this Greek spirit with abyss-like depth. Ingredients The final blend is then aged for at least two years, although Metaxa has blends that have been aged for as long as 30-40 years. The maturation occurs in large, 3,500-liter butts of neutral wood. Some of the butts used by Metaxa are more than a century old. The spirit is casked at an ABV of 40% and 46%. The original first two butts are still in use at the distillery, although they have been repaired many times. The manufactures don’t give up their secrets easily. What we know for certain is that no chemicals are used and only natural ingredients are added, with extracts and tinctures potentially used to potentiate the flavor of specific herbs.

Out of curiosity I tried it simply with a splash of soda, as I had a bottle of soda open in the fridge, and it worked really well. The Metaxa Master did say this was a versatile spirit, and he’s absolutely right. (Well, of course he is, that’s why he’s only the 5th Metaxa Master since the company was founded in 1888!) If you want to enjoy Metaxa on a hot day, try serving it over ice. This will help to cool the drink and make it more refreshing. Metaxa is Greece’s oldest and most prestigious spirit. It is a unique blend of fine wine distillates, brandy, and Muscat wines, aged in oak casks for at least five years. Metaxa is a smooth, mellow drink that can be enjoyed on its own or mixed with other beverages.

Created in 1888 and labeled first as a Cognac and then as a brandy until prohibited by naming regulations, Metaxa is exported to tens of countries. The maker remained in private hands until sold in 1989 to Grand Metropolitan, which in turn sold it in 2000 to Rémy Cointreau. [5] [6] [7] History [ edit ]
