As leaders of competing nations, players must expand their domains, gain new technologies, and build wonders to rise above all others and shape the world to their own vision. Additionally, Cavalry is strong against Infantry, who are strong against Artillery, who are strong against Cavalry, and if you have an advantage (in the previous example, the tank is superior to the swordsman because Cavalry beats Infantry) you get a bonus to the die roll depending on the current game era (so 1 in the ancient era through to 4 in the modern era). Each player’s focus row contains one card of each type, starting with level “I” and advancing as their pursuits come to fruition. The number of social policies is the same number of cities and the social policies add benefits for each victory path, so the player may reinforce one aspect or use the social policy to compensate for a sub-developed aspect of their civilization.

New huts and villages, with the addition of the concept of city state, which is a powerful square that counts as an outskirt of a city while the player has a figure on it. These go face down, one to each territory at random, and may be revealed by exploring the marker with a settler piece. This is accomplished through clever game play and purchase of several high-value civilization cards. A new "Investment" deck allows players to invest their accumulated coins in one of four main investments. Military Units - As previously stated, these can only be bought when the technology that allows them has been developed.
