About this deal

My hunch is that his books came out amid a sea of horror publications in the 1980’s and, without any movie adaptations, his name never could rise to the surface.

Not only is the writing of a quality that reminded me vaguely of Shirley Jackson (I think it was the baroque dialogue where every line has multiple meanings and interpretations combined with the darkly humorous nature of the text), who is my all time favorite author, but the book was downright scary! In the black hour before dawn when the prickled stars were cloud-obscured, and Stuff Elmo’s Lagoon provided only a scanty spectral glow, she could see almost nothing of the building that so intrigued her.

If you like memorable characters, gothic environs, a sense of humor and big scares, read everything you can by Michael McDowell. Michael McDowell was born June 1, 1950 in Enterprise, Alabama and attended public schools in southern Alabama until 1968. There is a part in the later story where characters have left the site of the haunting, and they know something supernatural is happening, and it’s scary. This week Benjaminoftomes over on Youtube did a video titled The Best Free Book Friday where he talked about Michelle Madow’s Elementals, and provided a link for watchers to download the first book of the series for free.

His first horror novel, The Amulet, relates the tragedies that befall various individuals who come in possession of a supernatural pendant in a small town. Luker’s own mother, for example, gives her grown son long, semi-erotic foot rubs in front of the entire family and no one bats an eye. India is a New York girl, and finds the isolation of Beldame intriguing and enervating by equal measure. Many of the best moments include no horror at all, but are mere depictions of this family living their unusual lives. But the scariest thing is that, were it not for small press Valancourt Books, almost all of Michael McDowell’s novels would be out-of-print and possibly forgotten. He was good friends with Stephen King, with his wife Tabitha King actually finishing McDowell's final novel. he could problay make a much larger book involving these main 5 characters their stories and family histories but he only scratches the surface and leaves the reader to fill in the blanks. After an ancient monster escapes, it’s up to Nicole and the others to follow a cryptic prophecy in time to save the town… and possibly the world.

My best friend Garrett — who I’ve secretly been wanting to become more than a friend — has one of these powers too. Written back in the 80's a lot of my fellow book loving friends have recommended THE ELEMENTALS to me over the last few years. After being betrayed by one of their own, Nicole watches helplessly as Blake is snatched into the prison world of Kerberos—along with Medusa’s head, which is the one item they need to stop the Titans from rising again. The Elementals is a fantastic haunted-house tale loaded with dread, eerie moments and good characters. The idea of the title creatures… spirits… things… whatever they are, is unnerving because we never quite understand them. The characters are diverse and black characters are written like real people - which is rare for an author who mainly wrote in the 60s to 80s. He was born in Enterprise, Alabama, in 1950 and died of AIDS-related illness in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1999. So India’s Grandfather takes it upon himself to sneak back down to Beldame to burn down the houses, starting with the third house. Luker takes drugs and lives an unfettered life to deal with the anxiety of not wanting to continue the patterns of his family line.
