About this deal

In his critique of Andersen’s work, Paul binding a leading British literary critic, novelist and a renowned expert in Scandinavian literature opined that “Andersen cannot be confined to the category of writings for children. His work stands at the very heart of mainstream European literature”.

Tales of Hans Christian Andersen can be used to target a range of Reading and Writing objectives from the KS2 National Curriculum programme of study for English across Y3 to Y6 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and Second Level of the Curriculum for Excellence in Scotland. Specific objectives include increasing pupils’ familiarity with a range of texts ‘including fairy stories’ and ’traditional stories’. Hans Christian Andersen ( / ˈ æ n d ər s ən/ AN-dər-sən, Danish: [ˈhænˀs ˈkʰʁestjæn ˈɑnɐsn̩] ⓘ; 2 April 1805– 4 August 1875) was a Danish author. A keen traveler, Andersen published several other long travelogues: Shadow Pictures of a Journey to the Harz, Swiss Saxony, etc. etc. in the Summer of 1831, A Poet's Bazaar, In Spain and A Visit to Portugal in 1866. (The last describes his visit with his Portuguese friends Jorge and José O'Neill, who were his friends in the mid-1820s while he was living in Copenhagen.) In his travelogues, Andersen took heed of some of the contemporary conventions related to travel writing but he always developed the style to suit his own purpose. Each of his travelogues combines documentary and descriptive accounts of his experiences, adding additional philosophical passages on topics such as what it is to be an author, general immortality, and the nature of fiction in literary travel reports. Some of the travelogues, such as In Sweden, even contain fairy-tales. The Wild Swans ( Sekai Meisaku Dōwa: Hakuchō no Ōji), a 1977 anime film by Toei Animation that combines elements of The Wild Swans and The Six Swans by the Brothers Grimm. The Shadow" ( Danish: Skyggen) is a literary fairy tale by Danish poet and author Hans Christian Andersen. The tale was first published in 1847. This fairy tale follows a tin soldier’s love for a paper ballerina. The tin soldier only has one leg, while the ballerina is posed standing on pointe on one leg, which helps attract them to one another. The pair melt together while dancing close to the fireplace, and all that is left behind is a shiny spangle and a lump of tin in the shape of a heart.
