The self help industry thrives on offering the chance to change your life radically by buying a book. It thrives because on the whole self help books don't work! If they did, then why would it be such a massive industry? If you want to change your life, you have to work at it. Self help books offer the world but plodding through them on your own can be disheartening and painful. After all, that's what therapists are for, to guide us through the painful chapters of our lives we might otherwise skip. Dr Elaine Beaumont is a psychotherapist who specialises in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), compassion focused therapy (CFT) and eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR). What's going on upstairs?: Social anxiety (James Kirby on Afternoons on ABC Radio Australia, 7.6.17) This module is about pre-empting and dealing with the common barriers that get in the way of being more compassionate towards ourselves. Typical barriers are positive beliefs we may hold about being self-critical and negative beliefs we may hold about what is means to be self-compassionate. Module 3: Preparing for Self-CompassionCFT utilises both Buddhist practices and Western psychological science. It draws on neuroscience, insights into emotion regulation and identity formation, interpersonal psychology and a range of psychotherapeutic models. CFT-based interventions can help people with a range of mental health problems develop compassion for themselves, be open to the compassion of others and develop compassion for others.
