About this deal

Unfortunately, an unknown side effect of the introduction of additional drying oil components resulted. With previous well-established paint mixtures boasting long-lasting white gloss finish the new mixtures failed to provide the same quality that many homeowners came to expect from their paint finish. Compared to the wealth of choice provided by Dulux, Johnstone’s range of non-drip gloss paint looks somewhat underwhelming. There are only four colours, though pure brilliant white is available (unlike the Rustins range, branded as ‘white’). You may also need a sash brush, depending on how much intricate cutting in there is. These are great for the tops of skirting board or down the side of architraves. Available online here. Although we’ve linked to tins of varying sizes, it’s important to note that gloss paint often comes in diverse quantities. While Rustins remove the tyranny of choice by only selling their paint in 250ml tins, Dulux customers can choose from 30ml tester pots, five-litre tubs, and everything in between. You have the traditional oil-based gloss, which turns yellow over time. Water-based gloss, which stays white forever, but generally leaves a substandard finish. Then hybrid gloss, which is a compromise between oil and water.

To understand why gloss paint goes yellow, it’s important to first understand the two types of gloss paint available within the UK. Gloss paint, sold in either oil-based or water-based formulas – with oil-based gloss paint the most popular choice among homeowners. This paint’s most significant attribute is its affordability. I.e. 0.75 litres of paint costs half as much as Dulux and a third as much as Rustins. If you’re not buying in bulk, that’s a compelling advantage. Our ultra-tough paint is best applied when the temperature is above 10⁰c. It’s low odour so there’s no lingering smells but you might still want to open a window or door for a little bit of extra ventilation. Gloss is a product which seems to be used less and less nowadays, however it can still look brilliant in the right place, be it in a colour or brilliant ‘in your face’ white. I thought I’d do a Dulux Trade gloss review for you, but I’m also going to mention a couple of other gloss products from Dulux which may be of interest. Water-based gloss is harder to use (not levelling like oil-based gloss) but it won’t yellow with time, which is important for the client. One thing that is important for any decorator is drying time, and water-based gloss has a drying time of around 6 hours. This means you can put second coat on same day. It also doesn’t smell like solvent and finally, your brushes are easier to clean.

While some paints can leave a strong odour for a lengthy period of time, you won’t get that problem with Brilliant White The issue has affected all oil-based gloss paint manufacturers within the UK. Where the solution has been the development of more robust water-based gloss paints with low odour and low VOC contents that don’t yellow. The Solution is a Water-Based Non-Yellowing Gloss Paint It’s funny, a few years ago, Johnstone’s Aqua was widely regarded as the best white water-based gloss paint available. However, comparing it to the more modern Teknos Futura 90 just outlines its flaws. It is still good, but it’s harder to apply, can damage your brushes and turns yellow after a couple of years. Other than the type of finish you’re after, you’ll also have to decide whether you want oil- or water-based paint.

This is the main product on the list. Dulux Trade oil-based gloss leaves a very bright glossy finish which can stay white for years. The most popular colour being “brilliant white”, however you can get in tinted into any from Dulux’s vast range. You should always use the proper system, so bare timber should be primed using Dulux Trade acrylic primer, followed by at least one coat of Dulux Trade undercoat, then your gloss. Previously painted surfaces should have a full coat of undercoat, followed by a coat of gloss. This is for adhesion, longevity, and durability more than anything. There’s a decent choice of colours (nine, including magnolia and the white we’re testing here), but no finishes are available other than gloss. This paint isn’t marketed as brilliant white, though users seem quite satisfied with its hue. Finally, if you have a period home and want to keep your skirting boards looking like natural wood, you can go for a wood-stain paint and have the dado and picture rails to match. Oil or water-based paint? In addition to its practical benefits, Crown Solo Gloss is also a joy to work with. Its smooth consistency makes application a breeze, and it goes on evenly for a professional-looking finish every time. Plus, with a range of gorgeous colors to choose from, you can be sure to find the perfect shade to suit your personal style. It’s not definite that all oil-based gloss paints will yellow in time, it’s a lot of work to put in for that to happen down the line, be aware that even guaranteed non-yellowing oil-based paints can often fail in time. Dulux says their range is suitable for internal and external wood and metal. Indeed, the only real downside we can find is it’s not the cheapest product on test — though it still undercuts the 250ml Rustins once you start buying in bulk. Pros Don’t forget to put down a dust sheet to protect the areas you don’t want to get paint on. And always wear a mask when sanding otherwise you’ll end up with a mouthful of dust! Whilst the practicality of the paint is its strong point, it actually looks really good too. Unlike cheaper brands, you’ll find that once it’s dried, it won’t less any of its sheen.

Gloss paint isn’t very good at hiding imperfections so the secret to get a nice smooth finish with gloss paint is to firstly prepare the surface beforehand. You can do this by sanding down any imperfections which takes us to the next step. Dulux’s entry into this list is merely one part of a vast range of products. You can choose from seven tin sizes, from 30ml tester pots to five-litre tubs.Water-based paints benefit from reduced drying times compared to oil-based paints and can often be dry to touch within an hour or two. While they often need multiple coats to be fully opaque the reduced drying time means the task of re-application does not have to be a lengthy process. This paint is touch-dry within an hour and re-coatable in around 4 to 6 hours making it a convenient option for surfaces such as doors and windows. Whilst the Dulux Weather Shield is pricier than almost all other brands, it’s worth the price if you can afford it in our opinion. We’ve used this gloss many times and it’s the undisputed best when it comes to longevity. If your existing paint is in a good condition, your job here is easy. Just lightly sand it with 240 grit sandpaper and then apply a primer and undercoat. Oil-based paint is more toxic due to the mid-high VOC contents, also known as Volatile Organic Compounds – it’s the number of toxic components found within the paint formula. VOC are harmful and toxic to both the environment and people but they help to produce a long-lasting bright finish for gloss paint.
