About this deal

I love the movie, too- it is a brilliant movie. But, don't let your teenagers who love the book watch this movie.

One of the twins, Isaac, talks to animals; Piper, the girl, knows how to get honey from bees and watercress from a running river. ('What about a meandering river?' Daisy wonders to herself. 'This is one of the things I most dislike about nature, namely that the rules are not at all precise.') Years a Slave' Leads London Critics' Circle Film Awards Nominations". The Hollywood Reporter. 17 December 2013 . Retrieved 21 December 2013.Osbert, the eldest, seems fairly normal, being responsible for his siblings while their mother, Daisy's Aunt Penn, is away but really wanting to spend time with his friends spying on the enemy. Twins Edmond and Isaac are the most strange. Edmond can hear her thoughts and silent Isaac prefers to talk to the farm animals. The youngest, Piper, is a sweet girl who has a way with animals too, and likes to forage in the woods for things to eat. The novel is also written as continuous prose, meaning there are no formatting breaks for dialogue (although paragraphs do still factor). This isn't my favorite style for literature, but it does work with the idea that Daisy is literally telling readers the story. However, life begins to change when Aunt Penn leaves the children alone for a few days to attend an anti-war conference in Oslo. That same day, a huge bomb is detonated in London, killing dozens of people. After the bomb detonates, occupying soldiers rush into England, and a full-fledged war begins. As soldiers make their way deeper and deeper into the countryside, Daisy expresses her romantic feelings for her cousin, Edmond, who reciprocates them. They begin a teenaged romance, made more dramatic by the fact that Aunt Penn has not come home, and the soldiers are still approaching.

The writing is good, but for most of the book, the author eschews quotation marks and often falls into the same ALL CAPS trap as JK Rowling. Rosoff probably had a point to make, something about the shift between childish self-involvement and the mature outside-focus of an adult, but mostly it came off as pretentious. The girls find their neighbor, a young boy, who is beaten, is drinking from a flask, and who proceeds to get shot in the head- blood splatter gets all over Daisy's face and she turns to watch the boy crawling, blood and tissue running down his blown-out skull, slowly dying. They flee.

I didn’t spend much time thinking about the war because I was bored with everyone jabbering on for about the last five years about Would There Be One or Wouldn’t There and I happen to know there wasn’t anything we could do about it anyway so why even bring the subject up. Macdonald made his name with documentaries, One Day in September on the massacre of Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics, and Touching the Void about a failed attempt to scale the Siula Grande in the Andes. The success of his first feature film, The Last King of Scotland, for which Forest Whitaker, as Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, won the Best Actor Oscar, saw Hollywood come calling. He had less success condensing the six-part BBC TV serial State of Play into a Washington DC-set feature film starring Russell Crowe and with his historical epic The Eagle about the Roman invasion of Britain. He followed them with a couple more documentaries – the user-generated Life in a Day and Marley, about the reggae star. The writing is superb, I immersed myself in the streaming consciousness of Daisy’s narration and breathed after 10 hours or so. In this interview, Rosoff talks about Daisy's voice, getting into YA by accident, and how it didn't occur to her that people would be disturbed by Daisy and Edmond being cousins. Say what? But the summer I went to England to stay with my cousins everything changed. Part of that was because of the war, which supposedly changed lots of things, but I can’t remember much about life before the war anyway so it doesn’t count in my book, which this is.
