About this deal

Allow your final glazing layer time to dry and then consider adding further detail to your painting. You can use acrylic paint to add highlights or more details over your glazed paint as you please.

Some pigments are more transparent than others. If you want to create glazes that are as transparent as possible, then you should select colors that are transparent. The color charts from the manufacturers will help you to identify which colors are transparent. Some brands even list this information on the tube. Most acrylic mediums could be used as a substitute for glazing medium but acrylic gloss medium will be the most reliable substitute in a pinch. It has the most fluid consistency and a gloss finish that ensures the clarity of the final piece. Adding white to the purple makes it more of a pastel color. The sample with the glazing medium at the top of the photograph is more vibrant. This effect is more obvious in person than it is in the photograph. A traditional resin from Greece, Mastic was once very common and inexpensive. But as it is produced from increasingly rare mastic trees, it is now somewhat costly. Mastic medium is simply a mastic resin in solution with turpentine, making it fast-drying; its main use in traditional oil painting is as an ingredient in more complex mediums such as megilp (a gel-like medium). Used on its own, it dries with a high gloss. DammarThe texture, when wet, feels like wet paper pulp. Once dry, it feels exactly like a rough handmade or lightly processed, recycled paper pulp, I would not say it gives exactly a manufactured paper feel even once dry. It is an off white colour when dry, making for a nice ground. You can paint three-dimensional works of art by building up a relief that can then be sculpted, sanded or carved once it’s dry. Modelling paste is also great for collage because you can embed all kinds of objects in the surface. Acrylic glazing medium has a thin consistency that’s similar to honey. When you add the glazing medium to the heavy body acrylic, it will make the paint thinner. This makes it easier to brush the paint onto the canvas.

The video tutorial looks at how to glaze with acrylics using a monochrome underpainting with coloured acrylic glazes. We’ll keep the piece’s freshness by building up layers of clear transparent glazes, and a ll we will use are five paints and a couple of brushes to create depth and dimension in your acrylic paintings. Gloss acrylic mediums are handy if you want to enhance the natural sheen and luminosity of acrylic paint. Using a medium to create a glaze will result in a semi-transparent, tinted layer on top of the painting. This means that glazing can be used to change the temperature of a painting. You can make a painting warmer or cooler using a glaze. If you layer two different colored glazes on top of each other, the colors from each layer will appear as if they have blended. Opaque colours cover other paints easily and are great for making solid, flat areas of colour and covering up any mistakes you’ve made. Some mediums include substances that further accelerate drying, useful if you like to paint impasto and can’t rely upon the oxidisation of thin paint layers. Common additives of this type include metal salts, particularly manganese or lead. These are usually toxic and degrade paint films, so avoid unless you’re in a hurry. Texturising or body agents

Masterclass

It was quite absorbent as a layer to paint over, but the overpainted colour began to bleed out around the beads, making sharp edges hard to achieve.
