When visiting Zante, it is important to immerse yourself in the local customs and etiquette of this beautiful Greek island. There are a few key aspects to consider that will make your trip more enjoyable and help you gain a better understanding of the local culture. Nestled in the enchanting Ionian Sea, the captivating island of Zante, also known as Zakynthos, is a holiday haven for beach lovers and party enthusiasts seeking the perfect escape. While it wouldn’t be my top choice for where to stay in Zakynthos, Zante Town is definitely worth a visit. If you arrive on the island on a later ferry, don’t be afraid to spend a night or two here as there’s definitely enough here to keep you busy for a day or two. There are a couple of large open plazas and plenty of shops and markets. Most of what you’ll ever need can be found here. You won’t find the history of Crete, the cool architecture that’s famous on Santorini, or the culture and towns of islands like Lesvos, Chios and Corfu, but “Zante” offers the perfect relaxing holiday spot for those in the know.

The southern Agios Nikolaos or Saint Nikolaos beach is named because of a quaint little chapel on the hill at the far end of the beach. When visiting the church, don’t forget to look at the fantastic frescoes and the Virgin Mary icon from Constantinople. Agios Dionysios Church The view out towards the light blue water of the Ionian Sea is to die for and the water is deep enough to swim just a few meters from shore. It’s really hard to beat a beach like this! Banana Boat Rides: Gather your friends and family to ride a giant inflatable banana towed by a speedboat.The building features a gorgeous and well-kept flower and fruit garden and a stone defensive tower that was recently turned into a bell tower. Getting to Zante Today there are around 40,000 people living on the island, but during the high tourist season, as many as 2.9 million tourists descend on Zante and the other Ionian islands. Instead, consider renting a car, scooter, or bicycle, but do ensure to follow local traffic laws and wear necessary safety gear such as helmets.The Naval Museum is located just outside the town of Zante, on Strani Hill, in Bohali. It claims to have the best collection of Byzantine vessels in the world. Its exhibits cover all aspects of naval history from 1700 to the present day and include an excellent collection of costumes from the Greek Civil War, and from World War I and II. You can also watch a documentary with information on the British submarine HMS Perseus sunk between Cephalonia and Zakynthos during the WWII.. When we were on Zakynthos Island, we rented a car and it’s a great way to get around, so whether you want to rent it in Athens and drive all the way to Kyllini to catch the ferry, or fly to Zakynthos and rent it there, it’s worth having a car. Where to Stay When Traveling Zakynthos Small enough to easily navigate by car, but large enough to offer a diversity of landscapes, villages and coastlines, this Ionian island should feature prominently on your next Greek Itinerary.
