Rowley is best known for being a good best friend to Greg. Rowley is quite immature and seems a bit naive, but his charming, cheerful and innocent nature made him more popular with other students (particularly the girls) than Greg had. His friendship with Greg is arguably more legitimate in the films than in the books: in the novels, Greg primarily uses Rowley for personal gain, though they are legitimate friends nonetheless. In Dog Days, he smashes " The Muddy Hand", which is really Gregory's hand. In the film series, Rowley is portrayed by Robert Capron in the first three films, Owen Asztalos in The Long Haul, and Ethan William Childress in the animated films.Jeff Kinney said that he named Rowley after a city in Massachusetts because he thought it would fit the character as being "slow and innocent and pure". In the first three live-action films, he is portrayed by Andrew McNee, while Billy Lopez voices him in the 2021 animated film. Notably, the live-action films rename the character to Coach Malone while the animated film retains his original name. Great-Uncle Bruce was Greg's great-uncle. He is a deceased character who is mentioned in Cabin Fever and The Third Wheel. Greg is presented with a rather luxurious blanket as a Christmas gift, only to be repelled by it upon learning that it had formerly belonged to Great Uncle Bruce before his death. In The Third Wheel, Greg uses Great Uncle Bruce's old cologne on Valentine's Day, which ends up attracting some old ladies. Gammie is briefly mentioned by Greg in Cabin Fever when he says she gave a miniature carousel that held spoons from all over the world to Greg's family five or six years before. In The Ugly Truth, when Greg brags to his classmates about his family hiring a maid, Chirag says that his family does not need a maid and is glad that his mother is there when he comes home from school. Later in the book, he gets invited to Jordan Jury's party, only to discover that he and other kids in his grade are being used as servants.Preston Mudd is one of Greg's classmates. He is said to have been the best player in the basketball unit of gym class during sixth grade at Westmore Middle School. Unfortunately, when his name was displayed as "P. Mudd" on the athlete of the month poster, this led to his classmates making fun of him, calling him "Pee Mud". In the online book, Rowley is said to own a PlayStation with 42 games. However, in the movie, Rowley is shown to have a Wii, meaning that he possibly upgraded his console. Although much of Greg’s character is to a degree obnoxious, he does have a number of redeeming features, and his character flaws have become less well-defined as the series has progressed.
