About this deal

This is a fictional book where a man goes into the rainforest in search of the Great Kapok Tree so he can cut it down. Once in the forest he gets tired and decides to take a nap beside the tree. During this nap many of the creatures that live at the Kapok tree talk to him in his sleep trying to convince him to not cut the tree down. When the man wakes up he realizes the importance of the tree and does not cut it down. How does cutting down the Great Kapok Tree affect the animals living there? Make a list of ways, using examples from the text. Why do people cut down the trees in the rainforest? Can you find out why? What can we do to protect rainforests? There is a fascinating story related to the kapok tree’s history and mythological values. It is considered one of the many wonders of the world.

The anteaters tell the man, “what happens tomorrow depends on what you do today.” Can you think of an example of when this has come true? What can you do today to make a positive change for tomorrow? Find words that the author has used to describe the animals (e.g. colourful parrots, silent snakes, graceful jaguars). Can you think of any others? The trees’ roots are said to reach the underworld, while the giant tree is upheld the world from above. Imagine that you are standing under the Great Kapok Tree. What sounds might you hear? Could you create a piece of music / audio that reflects this?

Zara said, "I took away from this book that we should be nicer to Mother Nature. If you're not, the things on the Earth will die." The porcupines tell the man that the tree produces oxygen. Can you find out more about photosynthesis? Make a diagram to teach others about the process. Romans, Dorothy Jennifer (2013). What might he say to the man he was with at the start of the story?Use drawing / painting software to create a picture of a rainforest. Could you try to recreate the front cover of the book? The Great Kapok Tree is an American children's picture book about rainforest conservation. It was written and illustrated by Lynne Cherry and was originally published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich in 1990. The book is dedicated to Chico Mendes, a Brazilian rubber tapper trying to protect the rainforests, who was murdered in 1988. As the unopened fruit doesn’t sink inside the water, it is believed that the fruit of the tree floated from Latin America to Africa through the ocean. Did You Know... Use the first line of the book (“Two men walked into the rain forest”) as the starting point for your own story. It’s a simple, but powerful read and I love this book! I would use it as part of a rainforest, environmentalism or author’s purpose – persuasion thematic unit. It really is versatile and could be used for various reasons. We could use it to study geography and culture (related to South America,) as well as animal’s habitats and biomes. This could lead to further research on additional plants and animals as well. We’d also explore topics such as recycling and going “green” in an attempt to help save the planet and talk about the importance of the rainforest and flora and fauna around us. It would culminate in writing a persuasive piece, as the students attempt to argue a point using evidence. It’s also good for discussing point of view as we can identify Cherry’s POV on the environment and what strategies/ techniques she uses to display her voice. We could study additional texts, including nonfiction, as well to round out the unit. The book could be turned into a play if time allowed. p>She is a highly skilled professional with six years of experience in writing and a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from PSG College of Arts and Science.
