About this deal

We feel that our critique and explanation thereof is more important than a static score, and all relevant information relating to a game, and whether it is worth your gaming dollar, is included in the body of our reviews. As the game timer advances, both expected events (spread of radiation, combat, feeding your citizens) and unexpected events may occur. Downfallbegins at the high-water mark of Axis expansion in November 1942 and ends in May 1945 at Germany’s surrender. Though the two players share the goal of defeating the Reich, each seeks a victory that favors their dominance in post-war Europe. Only 3 Event cards are used each game, from a deck of 25, and they can have wildly profound effects on the game.

When we play the game we allowed players to turn the wheel one way and then the other way in the same turn as the rules only say that you can only turn one wheel and it can't be the wheel that the last player turned. While it's not the speediest game to play it's consistent so Downfall is easier to get to the table than some of the all-day-long play times of some other popular 4X board games. Wars and conflicts had raged now and again for decades prior, populations rising up, and the global government seeking to quell the conflict and maintain the status quo. The TechRaptor tabletop team has decided that the content of our tabletop reviews is more important than an arbitrary numbered score. Resources can be hard to come by, and it can be difficult to feed all of your people (and it gets progressively harder as the game moves forward) so the game really feels like a struggle for survival in a deadly world, even when you don't take the other players into account. No one knows who pressed the button first, and in the harsh realities of the world that followed, no one cared.

The idea of two players/teams playing against one another without knowing anything about the other player’s/team’s gameboard layout is an interesting idea. If you have any questions, comments, or would like to see you product reviewed on Geeky Hobbies, check out our contact us page. The player boards do a good job of reminding players what each action does, and they have spots for your 2 Reserved cards, your deck, your discard, and slots for acquired technologies. Players take turns using their game key to turn one gear at a time, with the aim being to get all 10 of their tokens down through the gears and into their chute first to win.The goal of Downfall is to get all of your discs to the bottom of the board before the other player/team. This is not necessarily a bad thing but it may drive people nuts who want more control over the outcome of the game. Since both sides are not lined up with one another there is no way to tell where a disc is positioned on the other player’s side of the gameboard. This player has used the top wheel to pick up the first green disc and place it into the second wheel.
