About this deal

Deservedly regarded as one of the best movies of Porn's 'Golden Age', TABOO excels in every department.

After returning home from the party (that turns out to be an orgy that Barbara only watches) her sexual tension is beyond insanity. She gets out of bed in the middle of the night and on the way to no where sees her well hung son sleeping. Barbara looks, and looks, keeps on looking and then explodes. Eventually Paul's blessed part is between her breasts and his manhood is sprayed all over her. Admittedly, I haven't seen the first in this somewhat notorious series of adult films, so perhaps I'm missing something. While the first and the third films focused on Kay Parker's Barbara Scott and her sons, this one concerns the family of Sherry McBride, portrayed by Dorothy Le May who apparently played a girlfriend character in the original Taboo. (This film, incidentally, was Le May's last adult film, though some she'd made earlier were released after it.) One highly charged scene is when Barbara prepares for a party that evening. We watch in awe as she rubs hot soapy water all over her naked body, and then slowly gets dressed. Little does Barbara know that Paul happens to be watching as well. See closely at the look on his face and tell me thats not real. We focus on Barbara, played by the beautiful Kay Parker, who's husband walks out on her in the opening scene of the film following stiff sex and a continuing downward spiral in their marriage. This leaves Barbara crushed and without financial support, forcing her to go out in the working world to find a job. However, because she's approaching middle-age, she is immediately unattractive to a great deal of employers, yet still manages to land a secretary job with a perverted boss. Meanwhile, Barbara's only son Paul (Mike Ranger) spends most of his time with his girlfriend Sherrie (Dorothy LeMay), who loves having sex with him.

A vivid fever dream of a show, stuffed with hallucinations and supernatural elements … Taboo. Photograph: Robert Viglasky/Scott Free Prods The stunning Kay Parker is unforgettable as the frustrated and finally incestuous mother Barbara Scott, bringing an integrity to her role that is rare in this genre. Thoroughly sensual, but never remotely sleazy, she became on the strength of this portrayal the most renowned British born porn actress, except ironically in her native country where censorship prevented it from being widely shown. TABOO is considered a classic in the adult genre and it's easy to see why. It's certainly a very well-made movie and I'd argue that it also has some good performances (one great one). With that said, I'm not too sure I'd call it a flat out masterpiece or one of the greatest of its kind. I can't help but think the film would have been better had it been made a few years earlier when films like this could have more "story" and actually have something to say. Like Ken Russell’s The Devils, Taboo holds the eye despite, or perhaps because of, its insanity. Photograph: Allstar/Cinetext/Warner Bros Kay Parker plays a woman whose husband leaves her and soon she is thrown into a world of bizarre sexuality. This comes to the taboo subject of her son who she begins to have sexual feelings for and he too has them for his mommy.

On DVD, Kay admitted in an interview that she was attracted to her co-star Mike Ranger in real life who played her son. This is not an exaggeration that will be explained shortly. One (well one of one) highly charged scene is when Barbara is showering and Paul is spying on her. Barbara bathes every part of her sexy body with hot soapy water and we watch her slowly get dressed. The look on Paul's face becomes obsession to the point of being hypnotized. It's clear that Paul is attracted to his mom but no sexual frustration happens due to the fact that he performs a threesome with two young ladies and another at home. On the DVD version for Taboo, Kay admitted there was a strong attraction for her co-star Mike Ranger and this is no exaggeration that will be explained shortly. Tom Hardy's character commands the screen. When he's on, you don't want to miss a single word or grunt. Taboo also has some great dark humor to release stress build-up at crucial times. While its no surprise Paul is in love with his mom no sexual frustration is about when we see him do two women at the same time and another one at home. I am not a fan of historical movies - I'm more sci-fi and futuristic action movies. So, for me to rate this anything above 3 stars would mean it's good, but that was FANTASTIC. The scenes here carry a terrific level of eroticism and hold weight as some of the sexiest I've seen in pornography yet. They are intimate, usually assisted by soft, soulful music choices rather than ones that hinder the scenes themselves, and are beautifully constructed to flow very naturally. It also helps that, again, Parker and Ranger are such talented performers, able to act, have sex, and get emotional all in a film that's very intelligently written, which only elevates the level of believability here. This type of historical drama is generally accurate (or in the case of Downton, has a passing acquaintance with accuracy) and largely sensible, its edges tidied to ensure that even the most harrowing moments are palatable at 9pm on a Sunday night. The results are sometimes wonderful (Wolf Hall), often pretty good (War and Peace) and occasionally no more than enjoyable fluff (Downton) but they are all recognisably from the Masterpiece Theatre school of historical drama. The glory of Taboo is that it is not.
