About this deal

Cold sore sufferers should be advised to avoid transmitting the virus, particularly when active lesions are present. Semprini, A., et al. (2019). Kanuka honey versus aciclovir for the topical treatment of herpes simplex labialis: A randomised controlled trial. Largely reversible adverse effects on spermatogenesis in association with overall toxicity in rats and dogs have been reported only at doses greatly in excess of those employed therapeutically. Two generation studies in mice did not reveal any effect of orally administered aciclovir on fertility. Lipsore 5% w/w cream contains cetyl alcohol and propylene glycol which may cause local skin reactions (skin irritation and redness).

Aciclovir is predominantly eliminated via the kidneys, primarily by glomerular filtration and to a lesser extent by tubular secretion. If you accidentally get cream in your eye, wash out thoroughly with warm water. Consult your doctor if you are concerned. The manufacturer indicates that the nursing infant will receive an insignificant amount of aciclovir following maternal topical use. Whilst aciclovir is found in breast milk, the highest maternal systemic dosages only result in the infant receiving a dose 1% of that which might be prescribed. This would not be expected to result in any adverse effect in breastfed infants. Karlsmark, T., et al. (2008). Randomized clinical study comparing compeed cold sore patch to acyclovir cream 5% in the treatment of herpes simplex labialis [Abstract].

For 24 days, PEG-based aciclovir cream 5 or 10% was applied to the shaved (intact and grazed) skin of guinea-pigs. The treated area corresponded to 10% of the body surface. There were neither systemic nor local toxic symptoms. This is also confirmed by histologic studies and autopsy. According to the test carried out by Draize, who evaluated the allergic sensitising potential of a substance, there were no pathogenic findings. Drugs in Pregnancy and Lactation: A Reference Guide to Fetal and Neonatal Risk, 9th edition (2011) ed. Briggs, G., Freeman, R. and Yaffe, S. Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, Philadelphia. Some medical conditions may interact with Aciclovir cream. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

Apply to lesion as early as possible at the start of infection. Treat recurrent episodes during the prodromal period or when lesions first appear. On the basis of continuous absorption the concentration increased as a function of time (higher drug concentrations being found 48 hours post-topical dose than 24 hours post-topical dose). Thus short dosing intervals appear rational for the special treatment of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections. Foetal abnormalities were observed in non-standard tests in rats, but only following such high subcutaneous doses that maternal toxicity was produced. The clinical relevance of these findings is uncertain. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Lipsore cream ifyou are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or are breast-feeding.

Type 1 herpes simplex virus is the usual cause of cold sores around the mouth. It also causes up to half of the cases of genital herpes. Neonates, infants born prematurely, those with low birth weight, those with an unstable gastrointestinal function or who have serious illnesses may require special consideration. For any infant, if a drug is prescribed to the nursing mother, it should be at the lowest practical dose and for the shortest time. When drug administration is unavoidable and breastfeeding is to continue, minimisation of exposure of the infant to the drug may sometimes be achieved by timing the maternal doses to just after a feeding episode. Infants exposed to drugs via breast milk should be monitored for unusual signs or symptoms. Interactions between the drug received by the infant from the mother's milk and medication prescribed for the infant should also be considered, for example, when the drug given to the infant may prevent metabolism of the drug received via breast milk. Not recommended for use by patients who know they are immunocompromised e.g. by HIV infection, bone marrow transplant or cancer treatment, except on the advice of a doctor. Such individuals should be encouraged to consult a physician concerning the treatment of an infection. The results of a wide range of mutagenicity tests in vitro and in vivo indicate that aciclovir does not pose a genetic risk to man. Do not swallow the cream. If you accidentally swallow any cream, it is unlikely to cause any ill effects but consult your doctor if you are concerned.

As the aciclovir plasma concentrations following topical application are below the limit of detection, no pharmacokinetic studies are available on topical aciclovir. Therefore, the following data is based on the data after oral or intravenous administration. Aciclovir is an antiviral agent which is highly active in vitro against herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2 toxicity to mammalian host cells is low.A post-marketing aciclovir pregnancy registry has documented pregnancy outcomes in women exposed to any formulation of aciclovir. The birth defects described amongst aciclovir exposed subjects have not shown any uniqueness or consistent pattern to suggest a common cause. If you have ever had an allergic reaction to Aciclovir, valaciclovir, propylene glycol or any other ingredients ofthe preparation (see section 6 for a complete list of ingredients).
