About this deal

Last year was a bad one for the leading chip manufacturer, during which it put out some decent processors and one real disappointment, the Snapdragon 810. That's no bad thing, as the screen on the S6 was excellent – but Samsung's made things even better on the Galaxy S7.

It might lack the new-gen hardware of 2018 flagships and may have been usurped at the top of the best Android phone pile by the likes of the Pixel 3 and Huawei P20 Pro but it’s a strong performer that can be had for less than most – and with a perfect 5/5 Trusted Reviews rating, it should still absolutely be considered. The only major quibble I have with the S7’s design – apart from its overall slipperiness – is its fingerprint sensor. The elongated home button still sits under the display, and it still juts out ever so slightly, rather than being concave like the iPhone’s. Intriguingly, this has left some people with the impression that it's not quite got the same premium feel as previous Samsung phones. Having grown used to rear-facing fingerprint sensors, such as the one on the Nexus 6P, the S7’s seems positively old-fashioned by comparison. So, when the Galaxy S7 is locked it can still show the time, date and a couple of bits of other information on the screen without eating through too much battery.

In fact, it’s one of the best looking phones we’ve ever seen and a far cry from the Samsung Galaxy S5.

It's less of a 'let's take our phone scuba diving to get some amazing pictures' feature, and more of a safety feature – and the phone will even refuse to charge if the port is too wet, such is its ability to manage moisture. The device retains the metal and glass chassis, but with refinements such as a rectangular home button, and a lower protrusion of the camera.

The microSD card pops into the SIM card slot, above the SIM card, and the phone supports cards up to the current maximum 200GB card SanDisk offers. However, the sensor remains the same size, and testers agree that low-light performance is actually better. There is one notable design change on the back – the sides now curve ever so slightly, just like they did on the larger Galaxy Note 5, and it makes a huge change to how the Galaxy S7 feels. The metal and glass doesn't offer much in the way of grip, but because the phone is better positioned in the hand I felt like I was less likely to let it slip compared with the iPhone or S6. I wouldn’t normally watch a film on a screen this size, but the panel here is so gorgeous that I can’t help getting lost in it.It also measures stress and O2 saturation levels, although it's unclear just how accurate these sensors are. That said, we're giving our Editors' Choice to the very similar Galaxy S7 Edge, which has more functionality and better battery life in a package that's not much bigger. The Korean company has been criticised over the years for complicating the excellent standard Android with unnecessary features and bloat, slowing it down and making it worse, not better. iFixit gave the S7 a repairability score of 3 out of 10, noting an excessive use of glue and glass panels, as well as it being nearly impossible to service certain components of the device (such as the daughterboard and other components) without removing the screen, which is not designed to be removed, and that "replacing the glass without destroying the display is probably impossible". It takes the most cutting-edge engineering to get all of the innovations and functionality of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge into their streamlined, glass-and-metal bodies.

However, my main problem is that it will only unlock the phone once you’ve pressed the home button or woken it up with the power button. The typical capasity is the estimated average capasity considering the deviation in battery capasity among the battery samples t. It's easy enough to wipe the sticky offenders off, but it's annoying to have to do it time and again. The Galaxy S7's USB port is exposed yet still water-resistant because of a rubber gasket blocking off the port from the inside of the phone. It can be used with the included "Smart Switch" app to help transfer content and settings from a previous Samsung Galaxy device running Android 4.However, rather than have two S7 phones that are the same size, the S7 Edge is now much bigger, coming in at a 5. Never mind that adoptable storage is an optional feature and that users who choose to can still use their microSD cards the old-fashioned way.
