About this deal

So far this week I have featured a series of activities to help children develop their sewing skills across a range of ages and stages. Today, I’m moving things forward yet again to share a project that not only encourages practice of different stitches, but also creates a tangible and useful product that can be given as a gift (or added to their own stash of sewing supplies…the start of many no doubt!) Read on to find out how to make an embroidered needle case, suitable for older primary children and beyond. Having got half way down my binca, I then repeated these stitches in reverse, but really anything goes. Keep going until you are two holes from the right edge. Secure by over-sewing your last stitch in the row, and tie off with another knot. Binca is suitable for a large needle to pass through, which is why children's plastic sewing needles, chunky or slim, are the perfect choice for young children to sew on binca with. Older children can use a metal sewing needle with a large eye for easy threading.

The fun with binca canvas is the it can be cut easily into different sizes depending on what is suitable for the the child to hold easily. We think that wool, yarn or embroidery thread make ideal threads for children to use with binca. A finer thread would not be seen too well. Some simple embroidery stitches that children can learn to do themselves, many of which are variations of one type of simple stitch. The sequence of activities provides opportunities for children to learn a variety of embroidery stitches, as well as joining fabric, sewing on buttons, measuring and cutting fabric. No matter the age, binca is an excellent fabric for children to learn to sew with. Because it is an open weave fabric, the holes are already in place to push the needle though, up and down, making the use of it an easy sewing activity for children.

Then fold your binca and felt in half, giving it a good press (you could also pop it under a few books to create a good crease).Large plastic needles are ideal for young children to use as they are safe and the holes in binca are large enough for the needle to pass though. Chunky needles are great for little fingers to grip, whereas slimmer ones are more suitable for those with a little more dexterity, wishing to create a specific stitch or design on the fabric.
