Eddie is found stabbed and murdered in front of the police station, which galvanises Nelson's team to up their efforts in finding Barbara. The gentle Bilbo is murdered in a similar manner to Eddie. The investigation suggests that a community of homeless people live in the disused and dangerous chalk tunnels of Lynn and Norwich and there are rumours of an underground society. Two local women disappear and there are whispers that they might be being held underground. One is Sam, a housewife with four children, the other is DS David Clough's partner, Cassandra, with whom he has a child. Ruth and Nelson race to find the women and a murderer. Ruth rushes to Eltham on hearing her mum has suffered a stroke.

Griffiths has created a bunch of characters I really like though, in a setting I love, and so will I continue with the series? That is a definite. The mysteries, for me, are always secondary to the character development, because I like or love all of the recurring characters. A new character is introduced to the police department in this volume. At first, I didn't really like the person, but as the story continued, I found myself curious to learn more. I should've trusted this author to create even an unlikable character worth following and changing my opinion toward.Far below Norwich is a maze of old mining tunnels. The sequence contains various fossiliferous beds, one of which (the Entolium Bed) has yielded the type specimen of Turritella dibleyi and contains 25 other species known from no other locality. This bed is known to be the equivalent of the Tottenhoe Stone, an important condensed bed that lies above the eroded top of the Chalk Marl, north of the Thames. At Culand lesser erosion is seen below the Entolium Bed. I knew about bunkers for government officials and about catacombs in Europe, but wasn't aware of so many underground cities and societies throughout the world which are described by several of the characters. In this book, there is an amazing system of mining tunnels some of which are linked between ancient churches in the area. Ruth meanwhile has been called in to investigate some bones uncovered in the excavations of a property developer (a favourite trope of the series) trying to set up an underground dining concept in Norwich – the bones seeming much more modern than first assumed (and with some possible hint of cannibalism). Several her colleagues also enter the book – one something of an expert on the tunnels, and one who is researching the rumours of an underground society.

It takes about 15 minutes to walk the loop. But we spent lot’s of time writing our names on tree stumps with the fallen chalk and building a den. As well as the chalkface there’s also a pond to explore. Local volunteers are working hard to clear the overgrown bushes and improve the paths. And they’ve done a great job. The Shenley Chalk Mine is one of the few places where the surface features of this activity can be examined by geologists.
