We are creating a great story. It is not a continuation of the end of Toy Story 3. It starts as one, but it will be a love story. It will be a romantic comedy. There will not be so much focus on the interaction between the characters and children. [...] The third film was a beautiful way to complete a trilogy. I don't think this film is part of this trilogy. It is a separate story, but I don't know if it will have a continuation. We don't start a project with that in mind. Not all toys are created equal, and in Toy Story 4, we get to learn that information firsthand! Out of the sadness of her day at kindergarten orientation, little Bonnie creates a brand new friend to bring home to her toy collection: Tony Hale’s Forky. With a very existential mindset about whether he’s a toy or a piece of trash, Forky’s antics cause quite a few headaches for Woody and the gang. The latest film in the Toy Story franchise doesn’t feature Buzz a whole lot, but during one scene he is in, Buzz asks Woody about the inner voice that tells him what to do. Woody tells Buzz about following his conscious, but Buzz misinterprets his advice and thinks that Woody turns to the voicebox inside of him to determine what to do next. This leads Buzz to press his buttons and use his own automated phrases to guide him. In February 2019, Tim Allen expressed interest in doing another film as he "did not see any reason why they would not do it". That May, producer Mark Nielsen confirmed that after Toy Story 4, Pixar would return its focus to making original films instead of sequels for a while. According to this new footage, Woody is directly responsible for Forky's creation. During Bonnie's first day of kindergarten, Woody accompanies her, and provides her with a pile of leftover crafts supplies he had found in the trash. From this pile of garbage, Bonnie produces Forky - her new friend and toy, who still considers himself to be trash, and not a toy at all. Whether his perception of himself changes over the course of the film or not remains to be seen. Forky, originally made to be a disposable utensil and not to be a toy, proceeds to break down in confusion following his introduction to the other toys at Bonnie's house, requiring them to restrain him from throwing himself out. Even so, on a road trip to a carnival, Forky manages to break away and launch himself out of the moving vehicle, insisting he was made for "soup, salad, maybe chili, and then the trash" before he does so. Woody pursues Forky, catching up to him and the two head to the carnival to meet up with the RV. As they walk, Woody tells Forky all about his life with Andy and how great it is to be a toy (and especially a favorite toy), finally persuading Forky to accept his new role in Bonnie's life. In past Toy Story films, the characters would instantly play dead the moment a human walked in the room. In the new one, they take a lot more risks that don’t add up. One of these, in particular, occurs when Trixie pretends to be the voice of Bonnie’s dad’s GPS.
