In 2017, all Xbox 360 Halos were made backward-compatible on Xbox One consoles, with Halo 3 later given Xbox One X enhancements.

The third installment in the Halo franchise, the game concludes the story arc begun in 2001's Halo: Combat Evolved and continued in 2004's Halo 2. Local area network or Xbox Live supports up to sixteen players in multiplayer matches, with game modes including variations of deathmatch and Capture the Flag. Bungie remained quiet as to what their new project was, leaving comments in their weekly update alluding to a "new project". The engine is capable of real-time reflections, but are often unused as Bungie considered it a waste of resources. For example, dual wielding has been retained as a feature in both campaign and multiplayer, HUD elements have been repositioned so that they are more prominently available to the player, and boarding vehicles have more varied animations and are more balanced.

When activated, the Halos would destroy all sentient life in the galaxy, depriving the Flood of its food.

Halo 3: ODST was later added to the collection in early 2015, and Halo: Reach in 2019 alongside the collection's launch on PC. The gameplay additions to the game, such as equipment and new vehicles, were praised; Gerstmann and Goldstein noted that equipment had much more relevance in multiplayer matches than the campaign.Knowing that the threat of the Flood is undeniably apocalyptic, and that the new ring is unconnected to the rest of the Array, John-117 decides he will activate the new Halo. It's been an emotional week for longtime Halo fans - with the online services for all Halo games on the Xbox 360 discontinued.
