Founded in the reign of Alfred the Great, around the year 886, The Royal Mint was originally one of several mints which were centralised to London in 1279. For more than 800 years the Mint was based at the Tower of Londonbefore moving to Royal Mint Court where it remained until the 1960s.The Prince Philip Crown was released in 2021 and is now sold out at the Royal Mint. It was designed by Ian Rank-Broadly, who also created the fourth definitive coinage portrait of Her Majesty The Queen.

Decimalisation had a profound impact on the currency as the sub-units of the pound were changed. Prior to decimalisation, one pound was worth 20 shillings, and one shilling was worth 12 pence meaning one pound was 240 pence. The heraldic Arms of Her Majesty The Queen and those of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh with legend and date below. This is interesting because a Crown had a face value of five shillings before decimalisation, and since the 1972 Silver Wedding crown was the first one to be minted post-decimalisation it had a face value of 25 pence instead.

It was also technically the first commemorative coin of the decimal era; making it clear to see why coin enthusiasts like the coin so much. Interestingly, this design does not feature the value of the coin on it, unlike today’s coins. Are There Any Other Versions Of The Coin? On the three crowns issued between 1951 and 1960, the value "Five Shillings" appeared, but this was again omitted from the Churchill Commemorative crown of 1965. Britain had only just completed decimalisation in 1971, it may have been sensible, with hindsight, to have shown the new decimal equivalent - 25 New Pence - on this and subsequent crown issues. A golden wedding anniversary deserves celebration, and the 1997 crown pays tribute to this remarkable couple,,who are represented on both sides of the coin. Philip Nathan has depicted the Queen and Prince Philip in magnificent profile portraits that are both dignified and reflective. For many collectors these effigies will be reminiscent of the coins of William and Mary, and of the medals of Victoria and The Prince Consort.
