About this deal

In Canada, it is routine to use automation with messaging and pictures to celebrate various holidays, events and momentous dates. These cancellations are also used to promote worthy commercial interests (such as promoting the Canada Post).

Slogan cancellations contain a slogan, perhaps commemorative or advertising, in the killer box. See further below. A ‘fine’ cancellation should be lightly applied if possible leaving a substantial part of the design clear of the cancellation. Also desirable are well-centred examples displaying all, or nearly all, of the cancellation on the stamp. This is particularly true where the cancellation is more significant than the stamp, such as a Wotton-under-Edge Maltese cross. Here, you would want to have as full a cancellation as possible, although it would still be preferable to have it lightly applied.Wing margins: Sheets of stamps may be made up of two or more panes with a narrow gutter between them. Wing marginal stamps are those positioned on the edge of the gutter and have an extended margin on one side. Such stamps were once seen as less desirable but are now of similar value to normal stamps of the same design. A postal cancel is any mark used to deface or “cancel” a postage stamp and prevent its unlawful reuse. In philately, they are sometimes called obliterator or killer. Centring is the term used by philatelic enthusiasts to describe how well the pictorial design of a stamp is positioned within the edges or perforations of a stamp. There are also a number of other organisations and philatelic forums where likeminded collectors are happy to share their experience. Many of them began to incorporate symbols on their stamps that had some connection with post office or local community. Stamps made of cork or wood began sporting designs including:

On rare occasions, a stamp with jumbo margins – where it has ‘stolen’ part of the margin area from those adjacent to it, can fetch up to double the amount it is they are usually worth. When a collector buys a postage stamp or post card on its first day of release, a special “first day of issue” postmark is applied. Envelopes or mailed items with this kind of postal cancel are called first day covers. Special postmarks and postal cancellations How can I stop my spendthrift son frittering away his inheritance on rubbish? HEATHER ROGERS replies The post mark, on the other hand, was applied by another employee in the post office. Part of the confusion arises because a postmark can substitute for a cancellation mark. When a postmark is applied too far to the right, on top of the stamp, it can serve as a cancellation mark. It does not work the other way around. History Of Stamp Cancellations When analysing stamps which have been graded for sale, look closely at the pictures and try to judge how that dealer grades his items. If you agree with their centring accuracy, a judgment can then be made in terms of the asking price.Ideally, philatelists prefer postal markings that do not obscure the stamp design. A postage stamp’s physical appearance matters a lot in stamp appraisal. Most collectors are interested in fancy stamp cancels and avoid the pen cancels which are more susceptible to philatelic fraud. More than 400 different plates were used to print the various Penny Reds and many were repaired or renovated before being used again. As a result, a wide range of Penny Reds exist in various states.

Without giving too much extraneous confusing info. to newbies the problem with cto s like much else in philately is that a sheep in one country is a goat in another ! Don’t let this special B-Grill stamp get mixed up with other 1868 George Washington stamps. While the rest are plentiful and not incredibly valuable, the B-Grill version is one of the most valuable stamps to look out for and only four known examples exist today.
