A censorship survey conducted in DeKalb County, Georgia, relating to the years 1979–1982, revealed that many schools had attempted to limit access to Animal Farm due to its "political theories". [63] Although the first edition allowed space for the preface, it was not included, [49] and as of June 2009, most editions of the book have not included it. [58]The barn at Animal Farm, on whose outside walls the pigs paint the Seven Commandments and, later, their revisions, represents the collective memory of a modern nation. The many scenes in which the ruling-class pigs alter the principles of Animalism and in which the working-class animals puzzle over but accept these changes represent the way an institution in power can revise a community’s concept of history to bolster its control. If the working class believes history to lie on the side of their oppressors, they are less likely to question oppressive practices. Moreover, the oppressors, by revising their nation’s conception of its origins and development, gain control of the nation’s very identity, and the oppressed soon come to depend upon the authorities for their communal sense of self. According to Orwell, Animal Farm reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and then on into the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union, a period of time when Russia lived under the communist ideology made by Joseph Stalin. [1] [4] Orwell, a democratic socialist, [5] was a critic of Stalin and hostile to Moscow-directed Stalinism, an attitude that was critically shaped by his experiences during the Barcelona May Days conflicts between the POUM and Stalinist forces during the Spanish Civil War. [6] [a] In a letter to Yvonne Davet, Orwell described Animal Farm as a satirical tale against Stalin (" un conte satirique contre Staline"), [7] and in his essay " Why I Write" (1946), wrote that Animal Farm was the first book in which he tried, with full consciousness of what he was doing, "to fuse political purpose and artistic purpose into one whole". [8] The animals at Manor Farm are unhappy. Farmer Jones treats them harshly and they've had enough. Old Major, a respected pig, reveals his dream: a vision of a fairer life where the animals are in charge. Then, Old Major dies peacefully and, inspired by his vision, the animals take over the farm. Snowball– Napoleon's rival and original head of the farm after Jones's overthrow. His life parallels that of Leon Trotsky, [16] although there is no reference to Snowball having been murdered (as Trotsky was); he may also combine some elements from Lenin. [18] [c] Further irony lies in the fact that the hoof and horn symbolise the " future republic of the animals when the humans have been overthrown". This is never to be, for in the end, the pigs come to represent the animals greatest enemy, so much so that: According to Masha Gessen, the metamorphosis of the eighth commandment ("some animals are more equal") was likely inspired by similar change of a party line which declared all Soviet people equal: the Russian nation and language suddenly became "first among equals" in official CPSU publications in 1936–1937. Popular Questions

it is ironic that the flag in Animal Farm represents green fields, which could signify peace and tranquillity, lives of relative comfort and hours of relaxation, as well as freedom from abuse. In reality, the animals were later exposed to the same type of totalitarian control that Mr Jones and his men exercised, when the pigs became more powerful and abused their leadership. Also, the flag later comes to represent this absolute control and becomes a tool for propaganda by the pigs. Attending meetings and performing ritualistic tasks and having compulsory assemblies actually disempowered the animals and they willingly bent to the pigs' will.
