About this deal

The film shows how Tibet was betrayed from without and within, and then the Dalai Lama, now 21, flees into long years of exile. The stakes were often very high and everyone played—even the servants, who sometimes contrived to lose in a few hours what they had taken years to save.

Seven Years in Tibet is a 1997 American biographical war drama film directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. The real-life Heinrich Harrer was in fact a Nazi Schutzstaffel NCO, and stated in his 1938 book that as a member of the German Alpine Association: "We climbed up the North Face of Eiger over the summit and up to our führer. For this reason, it was necessary that the movie underlines an emotional journey for Harrer’s character, who is bound to be a changed person after all that he goes through. The first book club edition of this work, published in the same year as the true first edition, in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. After the Chinese pressured the Indian government to threaten to cut electricity to the set and refuse to allow the film to set up a banking account, production shifted from Ladakh to Argentina. In 1948, Harrer became a salaried official of the Tibetan government, translating foreign news and acting as the Court photographer.

They forbade the game, bought up all the mah-jongg sets, and condemned secret offenders to heavy fines and hard labor.

The ship being long overdue, Harrer, Ludwig, and Hans Lobenhoffer tried to reach Persia (Iran), but several hundred kilometres north-west of Karachi they were arrested by British soldiers as enemy aliens and escorted back to Karachi, where Aufschnaiter had stayed. To have said that in 1939 would have been extremely bold, since Austria had been part of Greater Germany since the Anschluss of April 1938. In particular, cinematic representations of Tibet have intersected with politics, power and diplomacy, as this article will illustrate.
