About this deal

Lucian is the darkest character I’ve ever read, but in a way that doesn’t make him caricature. Sometimes writers go too far, and while you enjoy the over-the-top weirdness, you need to quell your disbelief a little. Lucian feels like he exists in the real world, although I definitely wouldn’t want to meet him down a dark alley. Or a bright, sunlit park in broad daylight. What was appealing about this one is it gave me a compelling story that radiated between the past and the present, a cast of complex characters and a delicious slow-burn romance that kept my heart racing.

I don’t want to really get into any specifics with this because there are so many potential spoilers that I might veer too close to, and really, this is a book that should be read instead of read about.Told in dual POV and with a shifting present/past timeline, this story unfolds at a measured pace with various plot points intersecting until it all starts to unwind during the last quarter of the book. Together, Lucian and Isadora try to find a common ground, and find it physically, but ambiguity remains that can permanently wedge them apart. Lake pulls emotions from her readers with every book, every story, every scene she writes. Whether that be outrage, disgust, fear, overwhelming sadness, swoon-inducing heart palpitations or ovary-bursting delight, her readers feel it all. I must say I usually avoid reading dark romances especially ones that have a fair amount of triggers in it. It was my mother who first told me that there was no such thing as fairy tales with happy endings. That's because she spent her whole life waiting for the white knight to come and rescue her from the life she so desperately tried to escape.❞

The main male character is known as The Devil of Bonesalt. LOOOOOOL. Maybe the Devil of Boning. I mean, these sex scenes were HILARIOUS. At not one, but TWO POINTS, this guy pushes his penis into her WOMB. The American education system really needs to up its sex ed game. The heart is a dangerous organ that isn’t meant to be free. Why else would God have built a cage for it?” Maybe that’s the reason they call him the devil. Because the madness that breathes within these walls is as real as the man who feeds it.” It is said that when Lucian was younger he was incarcerated in a psychiatric ward and scars mar half his face. The very scars that earned him the devil moniker. The breath of new life. The steady pulse in my veins. The long-awaited beat of a heart that's been dead too long. My kindred flame."Honestly, the writing style was so captivating. Seeing Lucian’s past and the things that led him to the man he is now gave her a glimpse of the rugged and uncompromising personality he portrays.
