About this deal

It’s easy to take each carefully constructed segment of the world for granted but these moments really highlight just how damn good Ori and Will the Wisps’ fluid movement and level design can be.

That’s an amazing feeling, especially during the series’ excellent signature chase sequences when the stakes go through the roof and one false move means you’re crushed under a collapsing environment, buried in an avalanche or consumed by the pursuing mandibles of a mammoth spider. For example, I immediately equipped the shard that let me cling to walls for fairly obvious reasons, alongside the upgradeable shard that reduced incoming damage by 10/20/25-percent. Players are presented with a complete world which is fundamentally non-linear, yet it is mostly locked off and requires the player to obtain various abilities throughout the game in a linear fashion.

Still, her playtime is 3x mine for about the same amount of completion, and I'm playing Hard while she's playing Easy. The game can certainly be challenging, but it never feels like you’re fighting with the controls to make Ori do what you want them to do.

Nonetheless I feel I should give it another chance before the standard edition is released to see whether it is worth purchasing. Each region is lousy with secret nooks, hidden just out of view or behind a clever bit of foreground.

She is currently part of the Digital Trends team, and has been using Apple’s smartphone since the original iPhone back in 2007. It is a really beautiful game, but I don’t think the visual style has aged as well due to so many games borrowing from it. As one of the most popular gaming systems of the last decade, the Nintendo Switch has plenty of Metroidvania games. The game maintains steady performance, and its fantastic art direction makes the jump to Nintendo's hybrid console with ease. This serves to not only emphasise that the player isn’t actually Ori but is instead watching Ori, but also that the player is not alone in viewing the events as curious shadows appear in front of the player, unseen by the protagonist, foreboding what is yet to come. It may not seem like a big deal that even the Switch manages to handle a fundamentally 2D game, but there is a little more to consider. This care and consideration given to exactly how the story is presented to the player is key to enchanting people and drawing them into the world, and is a huge contrast to the way that story exposition can be thrust awkwardly upon the player in similar games.

This is one of the most flawless, amazing masterpieces I’ve played in my life, and I’ve had a controller in hand since the NES/GameBoy era. Its many new elements expand on and add to the first game’s fun without bogging it down or becoming overcomplicated. No matter how seemingly insignificant they are in the grand scheme of things, it’s another layer of investment that Moon Studios has baked into the experience, which is so appreciated given so much of Ori involves simply getting from one point to the next as fast and fluidly as possible. Just stand within 3 metres of the enemy in any direction and tap a button repeatedly to watch the sparks fly. But that's about to change in Yoku's Island Express, a Metroidvania that combines open-world exploration with traditional pinball mechanics. When he’s not paying off a loan to Tom Nook, Liam likes to report on the latest Nintendo news and admire his library of video games. Carrion is a unique Metroidvania because you're not a bounty hunter or skilled warrior; you are a runaway science experiment whose goal is to escape the lab in which it is trapped.
