About this deal

With my two babies I sometimes changed at just the right moment before they even showed any signs of needing to and it was seamless. The Philips Avent teats come in six different sizes. The smallest of which is ideal for preemie babies, and the range goes up to a fast flow. If your baby is finishing the bottle in less than twenty minutes, and has made a mess or has gas afterwards, the nipple size is probably too large. The Variable Flow teat (with the I, II and III markings on the teat) is suitable for babies aged 3+ months old. This teat has a slot cut into it which provides an adjustable flow rate. The flow rate can be varied by turning the bottle to align the I, II or III markings on the teat with the baby's nose. Prescriptions must be written on an Authority Prescription Form, and the approval number must be noted on the prescription. Pharmacists cannot dispense the item as a pharmaceutical benefit unless it has been approved by Medicare Australia (indicated by the presence of the approval number).

Some brands have more levels – as many as six different types of teat – providing a little more choice for parents looking to find a teat that’s just right. Infants who are one to three months old and who are also still breastfeeding should go for the next size up, which is the Slow Flow nipple. This nipple has two holes. Once again, pay attention to the way your baby reacts during and after feeding to see if the feeding is an enjoyable experience for your infant. If your baby is dealing with a nipple that is too slow, your baby might end up being cranky, frustrated, take too long with feedings, or not get enough milk. If a baby is too frustrated, they might stop feeding, and your baby needs to drink the right amount of milk for proper growth and development.

It’s best to replace teats at regular intervals – at least every two to three months – as washing and sterilising will wear on the material. The number 1 is recommended to use regardless of the babies age if alternating between breast and bottle is the practice. Just to showcase how much flow rate varies by manufacturer, here is a guide to some of the bigger brands teat flows. The MAM Baby range features four different flow sizes for teats. Confusingly their final size is called Size x, not size 4, and is an extra fast flow according to the manufacturer. If you’re unsure if they’re ready, rest assured there’s no exact science to when it’s time to change up the flow rate on your baby’s bottle. This one compares to the Newborn Nipple, which as stated above, is ideal for newborns up to a month old, and breastfed babies up to three months old. Keep in mind that these time ranges are just referenced points and are helpful for making changes to the nipple size. Finally, babies who are six months old and older generally finish the bottle between ten and twenty minutes.
